Dear All,
One of my students is a trained dancer in Kathak, which is an Indian Classical dance form.
She has been awarded the Certificate of Sangeet Bhushan by the Pracheen Kala Kendra and placed in the First Division, in the performing art of Kathak. This certificate is nationally recognized in India.
She was placed in the First Division in her Bachelor of Commerce Degree.
She has obtained a CGPA of 7.18 in her Postgraduate Diploma in Management (M.B.A).
She is now interested in doing her Ph.D in Performing Arts or Dance, and she is also open to M.A. in Performing Arts or Dance.
Can you please suggest what are the best universities in the U.S.A. and U.K. she can apply to?
And also any other suggestions regarding the best course of action is most welcome!
She may also want to look at MFA programs, as the MFA is the traditional terminal degree in the fine arts.
It’s going to be difficult for people outside of her field to suggest schools from. Even if I did know what the top MFA and PhD programs were in dance, I might not know if those programs are the best places for someone to study and do the kind of scholarship in dance that she wants to do. So she’s got to decide what she wants to study - Kathak? some other kind of dance as well? what does her focus want to be - performance? Choreography? Culture?
Then she’s going to have to start visiting websites of programs and trying to figure out what their faculty do and where she’ll fit. If her bachelor’s college had a dance program, it would be worth her contacting one of those professors and getting some ideas about where she’d be competitive.
One thing to note is that many MFA and dance programs will require a bachelor’s in dance or “equivalent dance experience.” The university/program will be the one who evaluates what is equivalent, so she also may want to talk to a dance faculty member about whether her experience qualifies.
