UVM matches these criteria. It has a hospital either on-campus or very close to campus that facilitates medical shadowing. It fits “more north the better” very well. It has a pretty campus. UVM in addition to having a very good premed program also has a very good pre-vet program, and the required classes are the same. My daughter was pre-vet at UVM but knew quite a few premed students from her classes. One (now former) boyfriend was premed and had never had a B in his life, although I am not sure whether or not this was before both of them took organic chemistry. I am pretty sure that he is an MD now (my daughter is on track to be a DVM in about nine or ten months). To me it looks like you are likely to qualify for both merit aid (save some $$ for medical school) and the honors college, and the honors college dorm at UVM is the nicest dorm that I have ever seen in my life.
To be honest I am not sure that I have ever seen a dorm that did not have communal bathrooms, although one daughter (who attended a small university in Canada) did for one year have a single room with a bathroom that was shared with only one other single room.
I will admit that UVM is not always super highly ranked in US News rankings. After graduating from there, my daughter was however very successful in getting acceptances to multiple DVM programs, including some highly ranked ones, and some friends were successful in getting acceptances to very good MD programs.
I only noticed this comment after I had typed up the message above!
I just suggest OP call res life at each and every school to ask about first year dorms and or bathrooms - if it’s a deal breaker. No point in visiting if it’s an issue. Interestingly PC doesn’t discuss bathrooms on their res hall descriptions.
Interestingly UF is know for bad dorms but has fantastic (and pricey) off campus options to suit any taste. I wouldn’t want to live off campus first year but perhaps OP would.
Cousin currently goes to prov and her boyfriend studies bio. Both really like it. Ive been to the college multiple times and ive loved every moment of it. Unfortunately you’re right about it being expensive. I’ll go over merit with my guidance counselor when school stars back up again because our school has a unique gpa conversion.
Seeing Marist tomorrow. I’ve heard bad things about the town but I won’t rule out the school for it and I’m going in with an open mind. Hope everything goes well
Haha, I love UVM! Never went to see it but I really want to. Im so mad at myself I forgot it. Been working on regeneron and playing tennis the whole day and now my mind is just blanking out. Holy smokes thanks for reminding me. I really need to update my whiteboard….
My son chose his school over his initial favorite for that reason alone - and second year through now a year out of school, he’s always had his own bathroom and for the last 7 months his own apartment.
I remember you from some of your previous threads where you got hundreds of comments suggesting some great options for you.
I’m curious about what has changed since then (other than a somewhat higher SAT score). You also seem to have settled on premed, which you were leaning toward but were still considering nursing. You can study premed at any of the schools that have been mentioned (as opposed to nursing), which is great.
Will your parents be willing to help you pay for med school? If so, unless they can afford $100K/yr for med school, it’s best to minimize the costs of your undergraduate degree. You could do that for a bargain at a SUNY.
Previously you were open to attending SUNYs. I think it would be a huge mistake not to apply, even if your parents think they’re not prestigious enough.
Certainly better known than Marist and probably PC. Plus I don’t believe med school plays undergrad favorites.
Good points.
Probably smart to take advantage of free application week.
Another since you’ve gone south that might make sense - Va Tech.
Nicest campus in America (opinion), top rated food in the US (UMass another) in many polls oh one other thing you want - on campus shadowing - see link at bottom!!
They’re perfect for you - their res life page even lists dorms with in suite bathrooms. They’re ready for kids like you and my son. You just need to figure out which is for first years.
With a few exceptions, all the dorms are for freshman. VT only guarantees on campus housing for freshman and for students in a couple of their living and learning programs (LLPs). Those latter students sign contracts for two years.
A few of the dorms only allow students who participate in an LLP (not all require the two year commitment) which are basically special interest programs and only require a couple of extra easy classes. My kid was in one for STEM majors, but only bc she wanted to be guaranteed a room with AC.
Most students are glad to be off campus after freshman year where they can have their own room and in some complexes, private bathrooms.
Just be aware that there might not be many schools where you are guaranteed a private bath unless you need one as an accommodation. Almost everyone lists dorms with suites as a first choice at S23 schools, few get them. They tend to be shocked. They all adjust. The thing is, it’s a very temporary situation. After the first year, most move off campus and 90% of the complexes ringing campus have ensuite bathrooms. So, while it’s a thing to note about a school, it might not be the thing on which you should base your decision to apply.
I kept them in a note, but many (delaware, clemson etc) were more down south. I am very grateful for everyone’s help but I sorta wanted more north schools and I made this post with updated information plus more specific school lists. If I am correct, that post was also more of a “chance me” while this one’s a “match me”.
Failed at convincing my parents. A bad visit to Stony Brook since then made things worse. I know they want the best for me but they don’t know that much about college and think suny = bad. They are pretty damn stubborn. Like I said in another comment, they can’t stop me from applying but I wouldn’t be able to visit.
We visited many schools in the northeast and I do not recall any of them having private bathrooms. There might be some with suites…several students and a bathroom. Not sure how likely you are to get one.
You will not have your own bathroom at UNC so you might want to remove it from your list. There are some/many suites - several students and a bathroom.
We did not visit the small LACs…maybe they would be more to your liking? I don’t know…just asking. They also might be too costly.
As far as I know, Pitt doesn’t have private bathrooms for freshman without a medical need. There are some suites where you are sharing with only a few people and not the entire floor but you can’t count on that.
