I actually would have thought the problem would be more it is too CLOSE to New York. The fastest train is just under 2 hours, and it is drivable in just over 2 hours if you get lucky on traffic.
Maybe TCNJ? I donāt know about the bathroom situation but it has a good pre-health program (true of many schools).
Syra cuse. Kenyon.
St.Louis U. Creighton.
As an example of a community-oriented school that may offer you substantial merit-scholarship recognition, look into Wheaton. With respect to your academic interests, its biology program is very strong. You also should be impressed by its science center (which was designed by the same firm behind Unionās, also impressive, new building).
Unfortunately youāre right, but itās something I can overlook if I like the school enough: unc being one of those schools.
I visited Marist today and they have communal bathrooms, but I liked their focus on opportunities, their campus, and what I got out of my tour there so I will apply anyways
They are sorta uninformed and I could go deeper into that bias but since it relates to where I live Iām not going to. Maybe in dms if someone wants to know.
I like stony brook (except for the campus but hey i can overlook that) and I can see myself going there. I know I said it was depressing in a different comment somewhere but after rethinking I kinda changed my mind. They donāt like it but I donāt care and im applying anyways. I completely agree with you on your points.
Added to my list, would I be correct to call it a Likely? Idk about a safety but im pretty sure I would get in
Good luck with your son!
Definitely wonāt base my decision on it, just something id consider but since turns out many schools in the northeast donāt have privates, ill have to consider it a luxury and not a checkbox
Whats an s23 school?
Saw it recently but couldnāt really see myself going there. Not a bad school under any means tho.
Why didnāt you see yourself attending Delaware! Perhaps this will help us with suggestions for you.
Thanks, do you think it would be likely or target?
Wheaton in Massachusetts is probably likely for you. But Iāll let @merc81 give their opinionā¦
Good question; I probably should have specified when I wrote that.
Didnāt feel like a community. I get it since bio can be cutthroat sometimes but it seemed widespread across the entire school. My cousin currently goes there and she makes it seem like itās very hard to have a social life if you arenāt in Greek life (which I donāt plan on doing). But I think it was a gut feeling at the end of the day above all else. I do acknowledge that it is a good school
You want semi private bathrooms - to me thatās a big -I can overlook it
Now you are overlooking that you donāt like an entire campus?
Itās Sunday - what kind of tour was Marist giving ? Did the school have signs of regular life ?
Summer is better than other times to see things. But not perfect.
In general if you have desires, you should find those that meet them.
Otherwise your list will be out of control.
There are schools out there to meet exactly what you want - CNU was one.
We all settle in some aspects but you have some that will impact you multiple times in a day. Your choice to overlook that but I do think with research, you can find something close to your desires.
I agree. They have four short essays though that matter to them. Statistically, likely.
Ill be brutally honest with you, most of it comes down to gut feeling, which ill admit can be irrational sometimes.
I think im being wayyy too petty about the bathrooms thing. It seems to be more of a luxury than I originally thought and im not in a position to start making luxuries a requirement.
A normal tour. Got there at 11am, they did a 30 min presentation, I got a folder with more info, and then went on a two-hour tour around campus with a current junior. Nothing big or fancy (cough cough high point) but informative and left me pleasantly surprised. Club sports were out practicing and there was a few people on campus otherwise doing their stuff. I guess im sorta trusting my tour guide here and what he said about the social life and community, but I didnāt get any gut-feeling-red-flags from it at all.
My list is out of control I think i change my mind too muchš plus the suny debate with my parents really throws a wrench in things.
I concur with @thumper1 that Wheaton would represent a likely admission for you. Along these lines, its inclusion would seem to contribute to a category on your list that you appear interested in strengthening.
The bathroom thing is hard. Schools sometime vary what dorms are open to freshman. Sometime freshman get put into upper class dorms and these might be suite style, but on the other hand, youāre not with the freshman or a lot of freshman. So pluses and minuses. Probably more important to make good freshman connections
At Pitt, Sutherland is the honors dorm. The rooms are quite big - itās like a hotel layout and maybe the largest dorm rooms weāve seen for freshman - and there are suites. My S18 was in a suite with three doubles and one bathroom. IIRC, the four bedroom suites had two bathrooms. Itās not a double with a private bathroom, but 4 to 6 people per bathroom is still better than the usual communal bathroom shared by 20 or 30 people on the floor.
Perhaps other people can speak to honors or affinity housing at other universities for freshman.
I assume you dropped nursing
Regarding Delaware- I know a few students who attended and were not in Greek life. They had a social life.
What about Rutgers (not sure if you will make honors)? It may be too close?
I am still confused by some of the schools on your list given you want the northeast (I know you said you would make exceptions).
Edited- I thought you wanted to be within 2 hours of NYC, but it seems you want to be more than 2 hours from NYC.
Just from having looked around a lot, it seems to me like āmodernā first year dorms might have a lot of ājack-and-jillā bathrooms where two doubles share a bathroom between them, without any sort of general floor access. So the OP could search for āmodernā dorms or āmodernā doubles with that sort of configuration. Modern āsuitesā for first-years may then have a similar setup where 4-6 kids in some way share one bathroom without floor access.
Getting the ratio below 4:1 seems like a much harder proposition to me. That said, my always-lucky S24 got assigned what used to be a triple that got converted to a double that has a bathroom for just those two kids (this is at WUSTL). Obviously other kids get assigned what is normally upper-class housing.
But barring a documented need for an accommodation or such good luck, my feeling is looking for a college with a lot of modern jack-and-jills or perhaps modern suites is probably the best one can reasonably do.
