Match day 2024 - best of luck!

My annual thread since this is part of my professional world and things are “a buzzing” today.

Tomorrow, March 15 is Match Day. The day when graduating medical students find out where they land for medical residency training.

Those who have matched already know they have matched…but tomorrow they find out WHERE they matched.

Best of luck to any health professionals and friends or family members who are anxiously awaiting tomorrow or who may still be in the process (sort of a second round of matching if they didn’t match initially) of finding that “match”!!!

Daughter matched to the hospital where she and husband live and where she did most of her rotations. Family medicine. It’s all good.

Takeaways from the 2024 Match

https://www.medcentral.com/biz-policy/match-day-2024-results There were 41,503 residency positions offered. That’s 3% more than last year. EM recovered from its disastrous Match cycle last year (when there were 554 unfilled positions in the Match). EM had 135 unfilled positions in the main Match this year. A 13.9% improvement over last year. Pediatrics suffered a disastrous Match this with 8% of pediatrics slots going unfilled, compared to only 3% last year OB/GYN continued to be popular and competitive in the Match with a residency fill rate of 99.6%. The highest fill rate of all specialties. Only 6 OB/GYN residency positions didn’t fill in the main Match (before SOAP). DOs matched at an all time high rate in 2024 of 92.3%. (For comparison, MDs matched at rate of 93.5%) US IMGs matched at slightly lower rate this year, at 67%. This represents a drop of 0.7% from last year. Non-US IMGs also saw a decline in Match rates. Yes, about peds. Many programs did not fill their spots and many, many less candidates for the spots. It’s a shame that peds is a low choice in medicine because the reimbursements are not good. Also a shame for our most precious in society, kids.
