There were 41,503 residency positions offered. That’s 3% more than last year.

EM recovered from its disastrous Match cycle last year (when there were 554 unfilled positions in the Match). EM had 135 unfilled positions in the main Match this year. A 13.9% improvement over last year.

Pediatrics suffered a disastrous Match this with 8% of pediatrics slots going unfilled, compared to only 3% last year

OB/GYN continued to be popular and competitive in the Match with a residency fill rate of 99.6%. The highest fill rate of all specialties. Only 6 OB/GYN residency positions didn’t fill in the main Match (before SOAP).

DOs matched at an all time high rate in 2024 of 92.3%. (For comparison, MDs matched at rate of 93.5%)

US IMGs matched at slightly lower rate this year, at 67%. This represents a drop of 0.7% from last year.

Non-US IMGs also saw a decline in Match rates. Those who submitted a ROL matched at a 58.5% rate --down 1% from last year.
Match officials said data can show the competitiveness of specialties when measured by the percentage of positions filled overall and the percentage of positions that U.S. MD and DO seniors fill. Specialties with 30 positions or more that filled with the highest percentage of U.S. MD and DO seniors in the 2024 Match were:
- Internal medicine-emergency medicine—96.8%.
- Thoracic surgery—95.8%.
- Otolaryngology—95.8%.
- Internal medicine-pediatrics—94.6%.
- Orthopaedic surgery—92.1%.
- Interventional radiology-integrated—91.4%.
- Obstetrics and gynecology—90.7%.
The specialties with 30 positions or more that filled with the highest percentage of U.S. citizen IMGs and non-U.S. citizen IMGs were internal medicine (38.6%); pathology—anatomic and clinical (37.4%); family medicine (31.8%), and neurology (28.3%).
