Sorry for the confusion. Based on past year indexes, I am more than likely going to be a finalist.
If you are, it could work - as could Tulsa (full ride), UTD, and more.
Even FSU, would work - and surpass the GP waiver:
Out-of-State Resident
This prestigious scholarship is available to National Merit Finalists graduating with a standard high school diploma and who are awarded a National Merit, Corporate National Merit, or College-sponsored National Merit Scholarship. If you are a National Merit Finalist, you must list FSU as your first-choice institution by May 1.
Florida State Universityās Out-of-State National Merit Award scholarship package has a total value of approximately $75,776 distributed across four years. It includes a 100 percent out-of-state tuition waiver, a $16,000 Vires scholarship, and a $2000 NMSC stipend (if college sponsored). This scholarship guarantees admission into FSUās distinguished University Honors Program once National Merit Finalist standing has been confirmed. In addition, all National Merit Finalists who apply to the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) during the first year, which connects high-achieving students with distinguished research mentors to work as research assistants, will be guaranteed admission to UROP.
The main thing with FSU is the ever-declining acceptance rate, although Iām not sure if thatās a major problem because Iām above the numerical medians there? Not sure but still definitely considering it.
NMF arenāt finalized until early 2025. And actually NMSF wonāt been notified until September. But a NMSF is usually a very safe bet for NMF. 15,000 of the 16,000 NMSF make finalist level.
FSU is Alabamaā¦except Alabama is more geographically diverse. Itās your right to eschew an entire state - but I donāt see a difference and the same kids are applying and choosing amongst the two.
I donāt see an admission issue at FSU for you - itās a likely, even a safety, yes even with the declining acceptance rate.
OU with NMF could work - you said you liked it. OU has a beautiful campus.
And check out other NMF leaders.
The thing here though is - this is your safety - so very important - but still hopefully you are able to end up at one of your top choices.
The main thing with FSU is - how will you get to $10K?
I donāt think you can.
If you have a true budget, that has to drive your āsafetyā choice - and not a - I donāt like a state.
Your call of course - but then youāll be left with no one hitting your $10K budget - unless your reach schools come through (very possible) at your desired amount.
OP assuming your ED choice being Brown offers everything you want in a school, I would avoid schools like U Alabama. The two schools have virtually nothing in common.
Brown is a mid size northeast flexible curriculum school with minimal Greek or sports influences. The school prides itself on academic curiosity and social activism and takes great pride in its diversity of community and academic rigor. I canāt envision a student being indifferent between these two schools, because they are so diametrically different from one another.
Alabama does have an advantage in that it is cheap.
I suspect however that you can find alternatives to Brown that are affordable and similar in non financial fit. Trying to identify merit opportunities at schools like Bard, Skidmore, Sarah Lawrence etc may offer the academic and community environment you are seeking if an āaffordableā Brown is your goal.
Oh funny thing about that, Iāve reconsidered bama a little bit. Iāve checked out my available transfer credits and Iād be likely able to graduate in 2 years. Iām not still 100% on board with it myself but its something I am considering now.
Reminder to make your point once and then move on. No need to repeat information across multiple posts.
Based on my index and multiple past iterations of cutoffs, I am fairly certain
PSAT: 1500 (740E 760M 224 index)
I am reconsidering Brown ED, but its still a top choice. Thanks for the info!
Can you graduate other schools in two years - FSU, OU, etc? That brings your cost down on an average year basis.
FSU - even with the grandparent waiver, is $26,000.
Not sure how much more the NMF gets you to but I donāt think $10K.
Again, this is just for āsafetyā - as you have a top list that you hopefully get an affordable admit for - but gotta cover all bases in case.
Bama is mostly because of dual enrollment credits, I might be able to argue a case for OU/FSU but its not certain. If I can I likely will though.
Iām guessing thereās a way to pre-advise on that or they likely have a website that shows credit accepted for whichever classes.
You can call admissions and ask.
Good luck.
Checked equivalency and dual credit policies, UOklahoma and FSU SHOULD take all my dual enrollment credits. Thatās a huge money win, and makes things easier safety wise.
I would double check verbally - and make sure that it doesnāt change your ability to earn the scholarships, etc.
If a school counts you as a transfer, often times scholarships are not the same. I canāt speak for these two.
But great news if it will work.
One option that wasnāt mentioned much on this thread was U. of Tulsa because you hadnāt seemed enamored of it on your last thread. You had seen that it had a religious affiliation and had concerns. Well, the president at U. of Tulsa posts here on CC and I asked on this yearās U. of Tulsa thread about religion on the campus. I think that his responses would allay your concerns, and thus would definitely recommend that you take a very good look at the university, as you would get a full ride there as a NMF, it has fewer than 3k undergrads, it has a large population of strong peers (at least 1/4 of the last two classes have been NMF), etc. Iād definitely recommend checking out the school.
Agree about Tulsa. Since you were considering u of Oklahoma, check out University of Tulsa. Great award for NMSF
