What I really want is to be closer to a metropolitan area. Winston Salem does not have much going on. Further, I do not want a school with a super predominant greek life.
Ann Arbor is arguably one of the best college towns in the country with a huge flagship university and tons to do. The campus itself is absolutely gorgeous.
I happen to like Winston Salem a lot (our son went to grad school there…not WF) and we loved visiting. But the town is not one huge college town like Ann Arbor is.
@ChoatieMom might be able to better describe AA than I can.
Again I’ll ask, where did you apply last year and what were the results? Your high school record will matter as a sophomore transfer. You have one safety and three reach school listed. Are you looking for school suggestions?
Charleston and VCU for safety. Fordham too. Trinity San Antonio for match.
Wisconsin may for better than Michigan and UMN better than Wisconsin. Then again Ann Arbor will have everything immediately available that Wake won’t.
Given the majors, the where hardly matters…especially related to law school. Two years ago Harvard law had admits from 174 schools. Last year nearly 150. Schools far down the pedigree list. Find a school where you’d be comfortable. It needn’t be a Wake level. A great gpa, lsat and today work experience is what you need.
If you’re a first year transfer for 2nd year, your SAT matters.
Why? All of these colleges are excellent flagship research universities located in places with lots to do.
Wisconsin and Minnesota are located in the state capitals. But that doesn’t diminish the fine quality (and there is plenty to do) at University of Michigan.
I’ve been to Wake Forest. The greek life there is yuge. Like it dominates all of socializing. That’s not bad if you’re into it, but it can be suffocating.
You say that UMd is your safety school. I would give it another look. Some of the stats are better than Wake – and it’s much cheaper for a MD resident. The greek life is smaller and not as dominant. And you can get on the Metro to go into DC at any time. It may have everything you want.
Because he really wants to be closer to a metropolitan area. But he should think about that. For example, AU is in DC but still 15 mins from anything. Wake has some but little around it. That isn’t an issue at Ann Arbor. So maybe that’s enough. But if he wants a metro area it’s not. Madison is bigger. Minneapolis much bigger.
That’s all. All three are excellent and frankly where the goes given the majors won’t matter.
