Match my daughter - Mechanical Engineering Large School [MI resident, 4.0 UW GPA, 30 ACT, 1490 SAT]

Apply Michigan State if she didn’t EA. She will get into Honors which is like 1/2 tuition, $5,000 for study abroad and mentorship and think research if she wants it… It’s a really good program. Their engineering placement is great. If she decides she could transfer to Michigan after her first year or two or not. Big Ten usually have great facilities and opportunities. For Mechanical she would have internship opportunities.

Honors for instate only comes with $5k in scholarships and technically it’s not guaranteed although she would probably have a good chance of that scholarship. It’s out of state that has that benefit of study abroad. The professorial assistantship that honors can get is also insanely competitive, although it would be 4k for the first two years.

Edit: It was one of the only honors programs I was interested in though, as it was pretty cool.

if chem literally didn’t fit in her schedule due to another required class, that is something they may well understand. Make sure it is in additional info section and ideally in counselor recommendation explaining the situation.

If she just preferred to take something else, that is another story.
What sciences has she taken then? AP Physics, Bio? intro physics? what is the 4th if no chem?

Can you find a school where you pick majors later? If you are saying you are a non-engineer they may care less about Chem. Does she have evidence of other interests?

We visited URI and UVM and pretty sure neither requires direct-admit to engineering and that you can switch in. (For URI you technically don’t enter a major right away until done with some core class - brand new engineering building too!). This is dicey, overall, but the chem thing is hard. They are very different than UTK though.

Thanks for the update. I know several people with your stats that have gotten it in the past for oos. My son was offered it several years ago. But it’s still a great deal and respected. You will get a good job offer (if you work hard and active on campus) at MSU. Being instate it’s a great option. Kettering would of been interesting but not having chemistry becomes the issue.
