Essays/LORs/Other
*Great essays (reviewed by AP english teacher), great LOR.

Cost Constraints / Budget Open for anything

Schools
Applied: University of Michigan, Michigan Tech, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Western Michigan University, University of Tennessee. All early action
Deferred from University of Tennessee.
Accepted to Western and Michigan Tech
*Learned too late that she was missing Chemistry class needed for University of Michigan and Purdue
She is looking for some regular decision schools. She had her heart set on UTK. She would like a large D1 school.
I would like her to stay close but she is open (No California or New York)

Use the 1490 SAT.

Is the missing Chem class gonna cause issue at other schools? Seems like it would. The UTK deferral makes no sense - is it related ?

If liked UTK, try UK and U Arkansas. LSU too. Arizona is another.

Alabama is not in city but could work. How about Kansas. Iowa state is easy and well thought of.

Want her close ? Michigan State.

But most schools have similar requirement s related to lab science.

Did your D have no chemistry class, at any level at all, in HS?

Iowa has a great engineering program but I believe they also require a year of chem.

No Chem. We are in a small school and it didn’t fit into her schedule. She decided to take AP Physics in its place because she could take it online (flexible scheduling options). She thought since it was more rigorous and more applicable (to Mechanical Engineering) it would be ok. Yes - I should have caught it and I would have hoped that someone in the counseling office should have caught it as well. :frowning:

Thank you - some good options to look at. She does have AP Physics which is a lab science - just no Chem.
We heard through CC chat that UTK is acknowledging that there was a glitch in their system that caused some deferrals (my daughter is included in this group). So there may be hope still for UTK. Now I just have to get my other daughter (twins) off the deferral list!

Yes, but she should have had three years of lab science…does she three?

That might be your issue - at many or even all - of the schools.

You’ll find out.

UTK can also admit as exploratory if that happens - and then she can try and transfer in.

I don’t think the stats per se are the issue - but perhaps the HS prep for engineering. And like you said - maybe they sent out notes in error - and that would be welcome to your daughter.

You’ll find out - most certainly.

But there’s lots of schools that fit the UTK mold. UTK is becoming more popular but I can’t imagine to the level of your daughter’s stats. But if she likes UTK, there’s many others she can like - that are similar - i.e. in/adjacent to downtowns - and frankly (in my opinion) nicer campuses - UK, LSU, Arkansas (especially this one), etc.

Does this mean she is not happy with any of her acceptances and wants more choices in April?

Apply to Pitt.

It’s busy, fun, large, rah-rah sports, great academics. Pittsburgh is a blend of Midwest and east coast.

Pitt likes high grades and especially high test scores so submit the SAT only. The high rank is also a nice plus.

There is a personal statement section that you can use to explain the chemistry. Just tell them you will take it as a freshman. As #1 rank you have proven you’re a solid student. I doubt this will be an issue.

The Swanson school of Eng has a common curriculum for first year student including General Chem 1&2. So, perhaps not an absolute requirement especially given that the student took the most rigorous schedule otherwise with all those APs. Is there a way for your D to take chemistry on line second semester? And yes, her guidance counselor should have caught that :frowning:

Good idea. I would also ask any schools of interest if they are okay with online lab sciences. More selective schools may prefer in person lab classes, but that’s not a hard and fast rule and would depend on the availability at the home school. I’m just mentioning so the OP covers all bases.

You might have your daughter look at the University of Toledo; the admission requirements for engineering are here: Admission Requirements < University of Toledo. According to that link, high school chemistry appears to be required only if a student wants to study ChemE, Bioengineering, or Environmental Engineering.

It is common for engineering majors to take general chemistry in college.

However, general chemistry in college may have a recommended prerequisite of high school chemistry, so it may be more difficult for a student who has not had high school chemistry.

I think she can apply to Mizzou with those courses – you could email engineering admissions to double check.

How does online physics handle lab work?

As a chemical engineer, I agree HS chem is desired but as someone else posted, perhaps she can negotiate and take a community college or online course in the summer as a pre-req

She has not heard from most of her choices. 1 was a safety school that she heard from. She is just looking for some back up schools in case UTK does not come through.

I am not sure of the specifics but I know that she had labs of momentum and friction and pulleys.

@Jgood

If Pitt makes sense, contact Pitt admissions. The HS requirements are here and I think you meet the letter. Use the scroll arrows to scroll right to Swanson College of Eng.
https://admissions.pitt.edu/first-year-student/high-school-requirements/

They only require 2 years (3 preferred) of laboratory sciences compared to 3 (4pref) for Dietrich Arts &. Sciences. It says chemistry and physics preferred but does not say required. So maybe you can work something out with them given all the other sciences taken

I thought she had acceptances from Western Mich and Mich Tech? Are neither desirable or affordable?

There’s been many good suggestions so far…have any appealed to her? Did she receive any communication from UTK about this ‘glitch’? Her HS counselor can also contact UTK and get feedback on the deferral, but obviously that won’t happen until early Jan.

It’s not clear to me that she has three years of science, ideally lab science. Does she? The online physics may be an issue for some schools.

I would look at U Cincinnati and Louisville too.
