Match my kiddo - NASA/Engineering in Ohio, scholarship hopeful [3.85-3.90 GPA, 30 ACT, Aero & Mech, <$25k parent contribution]

For Case- Applied test optional - EA. Deferred as of 8pm tonight. Need to decide whether to apply RD or ED2.

We knew it was a long shot…

Is it the top choice ? Does it meet your $25k budget ?

I just ran the NPC this morning based on what we submitted on the CSS - and it shows 30,900 as our expected cost… this is a bit higher than previous times I’ve done it but this time was with the official numbers.

Then the other question is - is $25k a hard target.

But equally as important, is it #1? If not then why ED regardless ?

If it is, then you have to make a choice.

If $25k matters, roll the RD dice. Worst case is a WL. They WL like 30%.

Then you’ll know the $$ are ok.

For what it’s worth - sample of one - my son is in a leadership program at an aero company - but he’s in manufacturing engineering as a role (MechE major). There are kids from OSU, Michigan and Purdue but also Akron and W Michigan and mlre. All make the same.

Good luck.

So many decisions still to be made here…

  • still waiting on Case. My kiddo is mostly moving on but not completely!
  • my kiddo was awarded 2500 Cincinatus scholarship. Just found out today. I know it’s not much but we weren’t expecting anything
  • kiddo got 11,000/year scholarship to Ohio U. We are going to check it out over spring break.
  • going to visit UAH the day after Easter
  • going to a WVU Honors college program later this month

UC and WVU are the top choices but my kiddo wants to see UAH and OU before making a final decision.

Please make sure that the WVU financial cuts won’t impact his studies as one of the engineering majors is on the list.

Enjoy your visits. It’s awesome that he’s wanting to see multiple schools even if he’s narrowed in on just a few.

Congratulations on such great acceptances! Looking forward to hearing about your son’s impressions about the college visits!

Oh, and make sure when you go to Huntsville, that you set aside a half day for the US Space & Rocket Center. It should be up your student’s alley. I’m not into science/astronomy - but it would quite fascinating…I learned a lot about the history of the space program.

Has your student applied to any of the competitive scholarships at Case?

“We offer a select number of scholarships, including full-tuition awards, that require you to provide additional information and respond to an essay prompt.”

Visits are all done.

  • checked out Ohio U based on the significant merit they offered but it was a no. Beautiful campus and great visit, but my kiddo said no.
  • went to UAH with my husband. They had a good visit but my kiddo wasn’t sold.
  • ended up on the wait list at Case
  • we went to admitted student day at UCinci and WVU- the final 2.
  • when we got home from Decide WVU - my kiddo was ready to commit to WVU!!!

Some Reasons why:

  • in Feb, we did an all day visit for students invited to the Honor’s college. It was a great visit. We were impressed.
  • my kiddo got a room in their honors hall and has been texting with their roommate and suitemate
  • my kiddo is impressed with their design/build/fly club and their rocketry club. Also has been messaging with the president of o-stem.
  • option for a double major in aero/mech, Bach+masters, or just aero.
  • their summer adventure trips look like a great way to make connections early on
  • in state reciprocity for aero and mech for Ohio

We are aware of the financial challenges there. I’ve been watching them carefully. It’s not that different than many of the schools in Ohio. But I don’t want to get too much into that here- but we have done some research. It’s good to be aware but it is not changing the decision .

Congratulations! Thank you for sharing his decision. Sounds like he’ll enjoy WVU, it’s great when a student connects well with a school.

No doubt WVU is going to be great.

I wouldn’t worry about core engineering programs. Looks like they’re cutting a niche one.

And supposedly they have a monorail - how cool is that?

Great choice I’m sure.

Congrats to your student.

Yes they do have a monarail. We’ve ridden it every time we’ve gone to visit. And one time- we got on the wrong one and ended up at the ‘service station’ but they got us back to the right place. It was an adventure.
