Match my Personality with a School

So, I’m an 18 year old white male, more or less upper-middle class. I am not rich, and am most certainly not snobby. I love music (The Mars Volta, Beck, Death Cab for Cute, Elliott Smith), love movies (The Royal Tenenbaums, I <3 Huckabees, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), love books (Naked Lunch, any Vonnegut, The Brothers Karamazov, A Clockwork Orange), assuming you know any of that (no one in my high school seems to). I like talking about politics, religion and philosophy, as I enjoy intellectual discussion. I am very sociable and love going to parties. I would say that I have great social skills, and love meeting new, interesting people. I also love computers and video games. This is a totally different side to me, as I have a level 70 in World of Warcraft. I DO NOT like elitists who think money makes them better, nor do I like snobs. I want to be totally comfortable at college, with a bunch of friendly kids.

So, here is my info, and my criteria:

GPA: 92.9 Unweighted 95.6 Weighted
SAT: 570CR/690M/640W
Top 15% of Student Body
E/C’s: Solid List, lot’s of community service, Honor’s Society, etc.

Criteria:

-Strong in Engineering (Computer)
-In the Northeast
-Friendly, fun environment
-Somewhat quirky/interesting kids (don’t have to be artists)
-Comfortable and pretty campus
-Stong academics
-Good social life
-Place where I would fit in and LOVE the time I spend there

So, based on that essay I just wrote, try to pair me up. Good luck :]

P.s. Here’s a little list I put together; let me know if any seem to fit:

Bucknell
Lehigh
Lafayette
Villanova
U of Rochester
RPI
WPI
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY New Paltz

before i saw your list i was thinking rochester and rpi

Heh, really? Pretty funny. You mean U of R, right? Not RIT? What about those am I compatible with?

As a side note, it’s a shame no one in your school has heard of the books you like. A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite books of all time. Vonnegut is good stuff as well. I have not read The Brothers Karamazov, but I do know of it.

Holy… all of your loves (music, books, movies) are IDENTICAL to mine! Good taste, man. Although… I’m a girl, and I don’t play Warcraft or any other video games… haha.

Ha! That actually makes me so happy. Great to hear. No one at my school is into ANY of that sorta stuff (no one even reads, and when I told them I saw Circa Survive in concert all I got was “you went to cirque du soleil?”).

If you’re willing to venture out of the northeast at all, try the Claremont Consortium. If offers the friendly, intellectual atmosphere you’re looking for, with the added benefit of small class sizes.

Harvey Mudd in particular would be good for your interests.

I really don’t think it’s too practical for me to venture out west. Tought though, seems like everything I want is in California, lol. What is there that I could get into, in the Northeast, similar to what I said, and like…Franklin W. Olin and Harvey Mudd?

okay heres the deal. i live about 5 minutes away from the SUNY new paltz campus. as you i was reading your interests, (especially the music, books and movies) i was thinking of how well you would fit into the new paltz community. Its kinda a rural area with a small cozy town in the middle, i personally think it’s also a very nice campus. you should definately check it out, you would be a great fit there.

Heh, kinda funny…I live near Millbrook, something like…30 minutes away from New Paltz, just over the bridge. I’ve really put some thought into New Paltz…what else do ya know about it? How is the Engineering dept.?

Hah thats funny, but i really dont know to much about it, ive heard good things and bad.

I posted this in your other thread:

Well, I’m not familiar with that many LACs. I do have a teacher who highly recommended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for engineering and computer stuff. Granted, it’s in Indiana, quite a ways from the “northeast.” Still, that’s not nearly as far as Harvey Mudd. If you’re willing to move a bit out of that region, I would definitely consider it.

Thing is, I won the RPI medal (15k/year scholarship, goes as long as I need) and money is an issue. I just couldn’t justify going to RHIT over RPI (not to mention distance). How about RPI? I drove through it today, visiting some family (grandparents live 5 minutes from) and despite the rain, it felt comfortable. The kids all looked really chill and cool, my type of people. The sheer number of non-luxury cars made me smile; guess it’s not a huge school for super rich kids (which I am not).

Hi! Based on your interests and statistics, you sound a lot like me. I don’t know if this helps, since I’m not really looking for engineering, but maybe you’ll find they fit anyway:

Wesleyan
Middlebury
Hamilton
Haverford
Dartmouth
Colgate
SUNY Geneseo
Colby
Bates
Bowdoin

Hope it helps!

What about CMU in Pittsburgh and as a back-up CWRU in Cleveland?

Tufts sounds like a good pick, having the intellectual atmosphere and tight student community. it’s close to, but not in Boston, which is nice if you want the amenities of a big city without being directly in the hustle of it.
Though it’s not in the northeast, you may want to look at Wake Forest. It has a great student atmosphere and an even better campus. Though laid back, the campus has an strong intellectual feel to it. It’s connection to faith is nice not only in itself, but in giving the opportunities to meet other students through service, etc. Not sure about its (possibly nonexistent) engineering program, but it’s worth a look.
For both of these schools, you would need to get your SATs up quite a bit.

clgaynor had a pretty good list for you as well, though, again, you’ll need to boost your scores a bit

Best wishes

Holy Cross-good combination of academics and social life. HC has very nice campus-1 hour from Boston and is SAT optional.

I also agree that SUNY New Paltz sounds like a good fit for you. My son is into Circa Survive as well and at the college he’s at most kids have no idea about the music he is into. He has an application in to New Paltz as a transfer right now. What other music do you like? Some of the other music he is into are Dredg, Kaddisfly, Vanna, Dance Gavin Dance, Dead Poetic, He is Legend, amoung others. If you both end up at NP, you should get together for concerts lol.

Dude you sound like me, with just slightly modified things. I’m black, really sociable, had a level 70 wow character (just rerolled a warlock :p), laid back, read a lot of books (although mine are more classical like Ovid, etc) and my music taste is slightly different (I listen to all genres, mostly hip hop, soul, rap, r+B, but also rock, techno, etc).

If you don’t find one that specifically is your tastes you can always apply to large schools, because you are CERTAIN to find your niche there.
