Match my son for Engineering schools [VA resident, 3.7 UW, 33 ACT, <$50k]

That might be right. It’s still worth a look - especially if there is any type of need. As a somewhat easier admit, RIT might work - plus they have a co-op and that could help on the financial side (neighbor’s son has made very good money doing his).

My son got into GT engineering last year EA lwith fairly similar stats, classes and ECs…his SAT was a 1520 so maybe slightly higher compared to a 33 ACT but I don’t think much. Only other item is an Eagle Scout, but I wouldn’t say they have 0 chance. Ended up staying IS at UVA

Swanson lists middle 50 as 31-34.

Where are you getting 34-35 from?

I wouldn’t say zero chances, but GT is very unpredictable. I know a girl from last year (NJ resident), 3.9UW, 1580 SAT, STEM leadership, robotics prize winner, etc who was deferred and then waitlisted.

I am only going by what I have heard this year from students at DS and DDs schools (two different schools). Which I admit is a small sample, so take it for what it is. Those who were accepted (6) immediately this year to engineering all had a 34 or higher (I think there was one at 33). But there was at least one who had a 32 who was deferred. It may have been for other reasons. I don’t know. It has always been recommended to us to maximize your chance of admission to be in the 75th percentile. But each year is different.
