Schools
(List of colleges by your initial chance estimate; designate if applying ED/EA/RD; if a scholarship is necessary for affordability, indicate that you are aiming for a scholarship and use the scholarship chance to estimate it into the appropriate group below)

  • Safety (certain admission and affordability) Purdue, IU, Rose-Hulman, RIT
  • Target (would be possible, but very unlikely or surprising, for it not to admit or be affordable) UIUC, Univ. of Michigan Ann Arbor, Georgia Tech
  • Reach: CMU, MIT, CalTech, USC, UT-Austin, Princeton, Yale

I can’t chance you, but have you considered WPI? It has the project based learning of R-H with the co-ops of RIT. Safety for you. Excellent school that you might not hear a lot about in IN.

Great list. Don’t think you need IU or maybe sub it for Minnesota or Ohio State which I think are stronger. Don’t think you’ll need them though.

RHIT is the outlier. It’s tiny. It’s fine - just making sure you realize.

Best of luck.

IU and Rose Hulman are safeties. Purdue could be moved to match since you’re in state. The rest are reaches. Your son is an excellent student and I think he’ll have multiple acceptances on this list, but the simple fact is that CS is the most competitive major and most of your schools have a sub 10% acceptance rate for CS. But you have two solid safeties and Purdue so the list is a good one.

WPI admits to the university rather than to major. Very strong in robotics and there are great internship options in the area.

Congratulations on your son’s achievements! He’s a strong candidate.

Unfortunately, UIUC, UMich and GT are all reaches.

A target would be something like UMD, but if your son is happy with Purdue, then I wouldn’t add it. In fact, there’s really no need to add anything to your list if you’re good with Purdue.

As an FYI: Yale isn’t particularly known for CS or robotics, but of course, there are other benefits of going there.

Based on current years data I wouldn’t put Purdue CS as a safety even for strong instate applicants. Target yes but not safety. The others are reaches IMO.
