I know you’ve already got WPI on your list, but let me know if you have questions - my older child just finished his second year there and it’s been a very positive experience.
I don’t want this to turn into a debate about LGBQT+ beliefs. Yes, a campus can be a friendly gem while the state isn’t, but most students don’t just stay on campus. Their college might only work with companies in that state for internships or co-ops. Also, many LGBQT+ allies don’t want their money spend in unfriendly states. My family would prefer to not spend money in any state that withholds rights from any individual or group.
We will be visiting more schools on the West coast thanks to your replies and suggestions.
Re: RHIT. He went to a summer program there. He felt it was too far away from anything. “Town” is too far away to walk to. Also, the closest airport is a bit of a drive.
Re: U of Rochester. No specific reason, he just didn’t like it.
I mentioned his PSAT score so people wouldn’t think his SAT score was a fluke. He is on an advanced math track at his school, but not the most advanced track. I mentioned that we have funded his education, so people wouldn’t think we were only looking for need-based schools or chasing merit.
catcherinthetoast: He is doing a lot of his own research, but I chose to ask my question here in case we missed a good fit.
I appreciate all of the helpful guidance I’ve received here.
Best of luck as you visit more schools. With such great up front research, I’m sure he’ll find a great home.
I hope you plan a visit to Oregon State. My son really liked it. They have a wonderful engineering honors program and it seemed to be a very friendly and welcoming school.
Calculus AB in 12th grade is fine. Depending on his AP score and knowledge of the material (checked with the old calculus 1 final exams of the college he attends), he may be able to start one semester advanced in math, which can help make prerequisite sequencing less tight and give a free elective later.
Still haven’t seen a RogerHub GPA have we?
From RogerHub
Unweighted GPA: 3.88
Weighted GPA: 4.13
Weighted and Capped GPA: 4.13
Something else to consider as you are visiting schools… Are there majors that aren’t in the College of Engineering that might interest him?
Some schools ask applicants to select a 2nd choice major in a different department. What would he select as his 2nd choice?
Do you live in the service area of any of the CSUs?
Yes.
All California residents live in the service areas of the many non-impacted CSUs which list their service areas as the entire state.
The OP only has impacted ones on the list. I was just curious if they’d get a boost at Cal Poly.
If the OP’s screen name indicates location, then the only impacted CSU that they may be local for is SJSU (SFSU and CSUEB are non-impacted, so all of the state is in their service area).
Ha! Good point!
Just circling back to see if your son is pretty resolute on the coasts, or if LGBTQ states in the middle are okay.
Any feedback on these? In looking at Google Maps they appeared to to be pretty good about not have streets go through the middle of campus, etc. But perhaps they’re too big or have some other issue. If you let us know your son’s reactions to the various suggestions that have been made in the thread, that can help us to figure out better possibilities to suggest.
We will look at the following schools this summer:
UCD
CSU Chico
U of Pacific
UCSC
UCSD
SDSU
Oregon State
U of Oregon
Re: other suggestions. We are in the process of researching them - checking majors, watching virtual tours, etc. It all can be overwhelming to him, so we’re not talking about college 24/7.
CSU Chico is not impacted, and engineering majors are not impacted, so an engineering frosh applicant who meets minimum CSU admission requirements should be admitted.
Movement Advancement Project | Snapshot: LGBTQ Equality by State shows which states are more or less friendly policy-wise. Not all coastal states are friendly, and only a few non-coastal states are friendly.
Looking at that map… Colorado might be a place to explore. Have you visited CU Boulder?
And school of mines. Roads but not main roads. Golden is chill. Seemed collaborative on our visit. Nice manageable campus.
Could do both on a visit. Very close.
