I’m interested in majoring in Computer Science and hope to focus on AI.
Basically I’ve been looking at some really good schools that I know will be reaches for me:

This might also be a reach, but if your thinking about Computer Science (and especially anything robot-related) you should defintely look into Carnegie Mellon.

I don’t think RPI is a reach for you. They really want to balance out their gender ratio and have a relatively high acceptance rate (72%?). For what you want to do, it is a great option. Consider applying ED, although I’m not sure how great RPI is with financial aid. If you can raise your math SAT score, MIT, CMU, and Stanford will be more realistic reaches (if that makes sense).

RPI is in freaking Troy, NY. Guess what people do for fun…study! Guess what their sports maskot is…the RPI engineers! Cold all year round with nothing fun to do. People also play Halo 24/7. May be a good school for what you want to do, but social life is…well…

Lol, actually the no-social-life thing doesn’t put me off as much as one might think. I’ve been known to prefer sitting in my room and coding to going out and doing stuff. Partying gives me a headache, and I’m pretty shy. And cold–pshh. I’m in Houston right now, and I am READY to freeze my butt off somewhere, if only to stop sweating for a bit. Plus, skiing is hours away!!! Squee The only thing I worry about at RPI is that their prof’s are rated pretty badly. I know that it all depends on who you get, but it still makes you think.

Hey all, thanks for the suggestions in this and my other post.

Right now I’m doing pretty well, but I’m in need of a couple of decent safeties. And I mean safety safeties; many of the suggestions I’m getting are: you can probably get into this school because it’s about a match.

My Updated List:
MIT
Stanford
USC
UC Berkeley
Cornell U
UIUC
RPI
Georgia Tech
WPI

Okay, I have to ask. When people say CMU, are they talking about Carnegie Mellon University or Central Michigan University? Or is there some sort of other university I’ve never heard of?

The problem with my state school is that I’d really like to get out of my state. If everyone rejects me and I end up at a safety, my life’s already bad enough; I don’t want to spend any more time in Texas. :D

Case Western might be another matchy safety. Less than half of those admitted have math SATs over 700. I think that both RPI and WPI (which has slightly lower statistics) are very close to safeties for you.
