I recently got my score back for the math placement exam, and I got a tentative reccomendation for math 105. This is what I expected it- math definitely isn’t my strong point, and I’m not planning on majoring in a STEM field (most likely polisci.) is it bad or looked down upon to take math 105 as opposed to calc? I’d prefer not to stress myself out with calc anyways, and don’t see myself really needing it as a polisci major as compared to a STEM major.
@alm2020 Absolutely not. It will be fine either way whether you decide to take it or not.
If you don’t need calc don’t take it… At school always take the easiest courses you are required outside of your major, it’s the smart thing to do
@michmaybe but won’t it look better to grad schools/employers to have challenged myself rather than to have taken the easier route?
If it is not related to your future job or major then they will not care at all, employers probably won’t even look at your non major courses
@alm2020 THis isn’t like high school where people looking at your transcript can easily decipher between challenging classes and blow offs. There isn’t an easy distinction like with APs/Honors vs Regular. Take what’s interesting to you and means a lot to you. That will be what looks best in general, and your transcript will mean very little to employers/grad schools in comparison to the rest of your app
Grad schools may scrutinize your transcript for your courseload. Employers almost certainly will not.
