Math 216 v Math 256

Will be a freshman engineer w/ a 5 on BC; anyone know if one course would be easier than the other.

Why not Calc 3?

@ SamIAm

Math 255, the Calc 3 course, isnt offered in the fall term. I’m not sure what the situation is for Math 285, but for those that want to take the applied honors sequence, they’ll have to do Math 256 first. Also 255/256 and 285/286 are interchangeable as calc 4 and calc 3 are completely different things.

I’m also wondering about this situation also. I registered for 256 during orientation but I’m unsure if I should go through with it. Can anyone here offer some insight on Math 216 v. 256 v. 286?

Im in CoE btw.

Also, I have a sligh interest in IOE, and I noticed in the sample sched : http://www.engin.umich.edu/bulletin/ioe/IOE.pdf</a> : 216 isn’t listed. Would this put me at a disadvantage course selection wise ( I noticed IOE was the only dept. not to have 216 ).

Isn’t 255 a prereq for 256? I took 285 last fall as a freshman and it wasn’t too hard. I don’t know a ton about the other courses though

Yeah, 255 is a prereq

[LSA Course Guide](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/cg_detail.aspx?content=1860MATH256002&termArray=f_11_1860)

I talked to quite a few people who took 256 before 255, and they said they’re completely unrelated topics. Plus the advisor said its perfectly okay to take 256 before 255.

Hmm. I just talked to one of my friends who took it and said he had a lot more work in 256 as compared to 216 ; also said curve was worse, so I’m sorta leaning 216 now.

I took 256. I can’t guarantee anything, since it was about 4 years ago, but I’d say the curve was way easier in 256 than 216 (and I had friends taking 216 simultaenously, so we compared.)

256 was definitely more work, and it was a more theoretical class, so you cover some additional topics. That said, the grading made things really easy - as in, about 50% got some type of A.

One more thing - 255 is in no way a pre-req. You need to have taken some flavor of differential and integral calculus (Calc. I and II) but no more.
