Math 218 - Doesn't AP Calc exempt from Math 118?

<p>Hi all,</p>

<p>While trying to register today, I was told that I had to take Math 118 before I could take Math 218. In the past, I was under the impression that a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calc AB or BC exam would exempt me from having to take Math 118.</p>

<p>Can someone clarify this for me?</p>

Mathematics Placement Test</p>

<p>Students who want to enroll in a mathematics course, either by choice or because their major requires one, must take the Mathematics Placement Test to determine placement into the appropriate course level. In the College, all BS degree programs require college level math as well as BA programs in all the sciences, as well as Mathematics, Economics, Environmental Studies, and Psychology. In addition, students who are entering undecided but are considering a major or minor in Business, Engineering, or Music Industry should take the Math Placement Test to be placed at the appropriate level. Students who have taken the AP exam in Calculus AB or BC and have scored 4 or 5 do not need to take the Math Placement Test.

Students who have had a year-long Calculus course in high school with a grade of at least B are eligible to start with Math 118 (Business Calculus) or Math 125 (Calculus I) but must request permission to register for these courses from the Department of Mathematics. Students who have taken the AP Calculus exam may be eligible to waive, Math 118, Calculus I (Math 125) or Calculus II (Math 126) as a prerequisite for later courses if they have received a score of 4 or 5. A score of 5 on the BC version of this exam is needed to waive Math 126 as a prerequisite for more advanced courses.

<p>When you register the system always reminds you of the prereqs. You should be able to register for Math 218 but sometime’s there’s a problem and the system says you have to take Math 118 even though you had AP credit. (Last week I was trying to register for BUAD 351 and it wouldn’t let me b/c I had to have taken Math 118 but I had AP credit so I just emailed my advisor and he fixed it so that I could register.</p>

<p>unless you took the exact numbered course at USC that’s a prerequisite, you always need to get it waived (it’s a procedural/technical matter, not a policy thing)</p>

<p>For example, I waived MATH 125 and MATH 126 (calc 1 and 2) with my AP Calc BC, and I took MATH 226 (calculus 3). Now you would think that would be enough, but for every single class that has MATH 125 or MATH 126 as a prerequisite, I have to go to the department advisor and get them to waive 125 or 126 before I can register.</p>
