My daughter received a 33 composite on the ACT with section scores of 36 E, 28 M, 31 R and 35 S.
She took the new SAT and received 700 Reading/Writing and 680 Math.
She is looking at Purdue, Virginia Tech, Cal Poly and Georgia Tech for a design or technology-related (“engineering light”) major, not an engineering or science degree.
Will the 28 math hurt significantly, especially at Georgia Tech, even if her major is not in the engineering school?
Her SAT scores aren’t as strong overall as the ACT, but the 680 math is better than the 28 math.
I should also note that while focusing on the math and taking the ACT again is technically an option she would really like to be finished with standardized tests. I’m inclined to let it go as I feel her ACT composite or even just the English and Math scores will look good everywhere she’s interested except possibly Georgia Tech.
Also, she is taking Calculus at her school next year, but not AP Calculus and she is among the best of the non-AP math kids at her school which will get her a nice recommendation from her math teacher.
Will her lopsided scores be ok based on her goals and intended major?
SAT 1380 is equivalent to C29. The C33 is way better than the SAT score. Yes, the SAT scores are more balanced, but significantly lower than the overall ACT.
Stick to higher scores.
Many times kids with ACT math scores that are lower than their other scores take the SAT II Math 2 and do great. (From what I’ve heard, kids tend to get higher scores on the Math 2 than the Math 1.) Get a practice book, time her on a test and see if you think it would be worthwhile for her to to prepare for it. She probably won’t mind taking this one extra test because it is just an hour long with 50 questions. The reply in this thread is from a person who felt this strategy worked:
