Math and Science courses for Anthropology/Archaeology?

I’m trying to pin down which courses I should be signing up for at my orientation in about a week, and I’m trying to figure out what maths and sciences I should be looking at (because humanities courses are a no-brainer for this major). So, am I going to have to take Chemistry and Calculus at all?

Thanks :)

It depends on what you want to do with your degree. In general, the sciences are very important in archaeology, and a minor in a science goes well with an anthro/arch degree. I would definitely advise taking introductory chemistry if you haven’t already; much of archaeology deals with soil chemistry, conservation, residue analysis, and other topics that rely heavily on chemical analysis. Analytical chemistry would also be highly useful at some point.

Statistics would be much more useful than calculus, though personally I think calculus is more fun. Taking a stats course geared toward the social sciences would be the most practical option.

I also advise taking as many computer science courses as you can. The importance of this is often greatly underestimated; computers have become an essential tool for the field.

You may also want to explore courses in geology. GIS, sedimentology/stratigraphy, and geomorphology would be particularly useful.
