<p>That’s because it’s graded on a curve, and there are a lot of people who drag the curve down…</p>

<p>In addition, many AP classes cover more material than would be covered in a single college course (i.e., 1-quarter or 1-semester course). As a result, the AP exam tests a wider range of material at once than a college student would be expected to recall on the day of the final. Also realize that this is in comparison to the “average” college course (i.e., counting JCs, 3rd-tier & “no-name” universities, etc.), not necessarily a course from, say, an Ivy(ish), UCLA, or even UCI.</p>
