Math/Astronomy Dual Major - Practical?

Hi, I’m probably going to be going to Stony Brook for the Spring Semester and was wondering if a dual major in math and astronomy is a viable option…because its what i plan on doing. Thanks!

gonna bump this and hope for a reply

Have you added up the requirements for both majors and checked whether or not that’s doable in 4 years? Astronomy seems to have a lot of requirements, and the sample program for an astronomy majors only contains 6 electives.

However, the undergraduate bulletin gave me the impression that a math major requires 11 courses beyond the math courses required for an astronomy major. Single/multivariable calculus and differential equations are required for both programs, and in addition to that math seems to require linear algebra, 2 semesters of real analysis, 2 semesters of abstract algebra, 5 upper-level math electives and 1 course in computer science.

You should talk to an adviser at Stony Brooks to work out a program that satisfies the requirements for both majors.
