Math at Caltech

Could some one suggest math classes that my son could sit in on during prefrosh weekend? He’s off skiing or he’d post…we’re headed to MIT next week for their CPW and he’ll be sitting in on Math classes there and someone had suggested he sit in on the same classes at Caltech as he does at MIT for the preview days for admitted students. He’s done multivariable calculus and is currently taking Linear Algebra & Differential equations and Math 74 “Transition to Upper Division Mat”(writing proofs) at UC Berkeley. He’s planning on majoring in Mathematics and its down to MIT or Caltech. Thanks.

Math 5c – Abstract Algebra: Galois Theory (9 am Friday, 151 Sloan), Math 108c – Classical Analysis: Complex Analysis (11 am friday, 151 Sloan).

At 10am Friday there’s Math 1c – Multivariable Calculus (22 Gates). It might be good to sit in on a class your son has taken to compare the teaching quality. I strongly recommend you visit the practical track class (even though it’s aimed at engineers) mostly because the lecturer (Nathan Dunfield) is really excellent and you’ll probably have him for upper division topology and geometry courses if you come to Caltech.

That’ll be a solid three hours of math, enough to provide an entertaining time.

Yeah ^^^

Other course times and locations can be found at:
http://www.registrar.caltech.edu/schedules/SP2005-06.pdf

Also, Ma 108c moved to 159 Sloan.

Also Math 4 (Intro to Chaos and Dynamical Systems); lectures are very interesting and the lecturer (Gorodetski) has taught the Real Analysis portion of Ma 108 the last two years.

In the same vein, what good physics or EE classes are meeting during PFW? Or any particularly interesting course for that matter?

You’ll get a list of recommended classes to visit in your PFW packet when you get here.

happyentropy’s right, but just because I want to plug the first of these, I’ll answer (all of these are on friday):

Ph 1c prac, 3pm in 201 bridge: It’s a frosh course for engineers, but it’s incredibly entertaining (it’s a demonstration lecture) and taught by a recent Nobel prize winner (Politzer).
Ph 1c anal, 11am in 201 bridge: frosh class for phys majors
EE 52, 3pm in 070 Moore: usually taken by frosh or sophomores
