Math centered activities but medical interests

It seems that in retrospect, my extracurricular activies revolves around math instead of my intended major (medical). Will it hinder my chances into acceptance? Do I need to state what I plan to major in? Shoul I use my math background as an emphasis to my application, and If I do will it hurt my premed acceptance chances? Thanks in advance.

Colleges know that most students will change major at least one time after they get to college.

Unless you’re applying to a 7-year medical program now, the college will not care that your ECs don’t match your career interests. What the college will care about is whether you show depth, leadership, passion in pursuing your ECs.

Meanwhile, being involved in math ECs certainly would help you be prepared for the math and science courses you’d need to take in college to be successfully premed.

The reason that colleges with 7-year med programs would want your ECs to be related to medicine is that such colleges do not want to select students who may decide that they don’t want to be doctors.

thanks for the response :)

There is a whole field of statistical math that deals with biological data, like genetics. It goes by several different names: Mathematical Biology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics are used, among others. If this field interests you, it would be easy to prepare your application with an emphasis on Bioinformatics, and your math activities would be an excellent fit.
