Should I send math + chemistry OR math + English for the Ivies? I want to major in Chemistry.

I definitely want my math teacher because he knows me the best. My Chemistry and English teacher know me equally well. English would probably give me more of a “humanity” side of my application, but Chemistry is more related to my future major. Which one should I send? Thanks!

I’m a proponent of 1 math/science and 1 humanities/social science rec, but the bigger question here is how well they know you. Chem is your future major but that’s not a reason to select your chem teacher - pick the one who knows you better and could write more about what’s unique about you.

Who is going to write the most dynamic letter to show you off to the school? That’s all that matters. Your transcript is going to give your grades and ECs that show where your strengths and interests are. You english teacher is a core class who can just as easily speak to your aptitude as any. You are not supposed to be a chemist when you graduate high school. You are supposed to have a rigorous well rounded education.
My son is applying to engineering schools. He will be getting a LOR from his AP Lang teacher. It is not his greatest strength, but he has an awesome relationship with her, she is dynamic, and has always taken an interest in him. He’s worked his tail off in her class and she has appreciated a ‘techie’ who took AP Lang seriously. Conversely, his AP Chem teacher is a great instructor, but a bit drab. As she’s new to the hs we have no idea how her LORs go. They could be glowing, but we have no idea.
Go with your gut. Who knows you? Who will make you shine? That’s the one you want!
