Math Courses at Penn?

How are the math courses at Penn structured? Are they more focused mainly on tests?(ex. midterm, final, etc) or do the professors actually give out homework(thats graded?)

Do the professors actually take time to collect and review the homework, or even check to make sure students have it?

and how often do students get tests? weekly, monthly, ect? (Im talking mainly about math courses like 104,114,115,240, etc)

thx in advance

mostly focused on tests, but there is homework… which is collected and graded.

tests depend on the class, but usually a minimum of 3 per semester, then the final.

It all really depends on the professor. I never took MAth 104, but I think it is coordinated among the sections with three midterms + homework + final + possible weekly recitation quiz? When I took math 114, there were two midterms and a final and the prof made homework and recitation quizzes worth 30% (this saved me). For math 240 however, we had 4 midterms and a final plus the weekly recitation quiz and suggested homework that was never collected.

If you click on the courses on the right you will find the generic “core” syllabus as well as links to many section’s websites where you can read about each prof’s policies.

How rigorous are the math freshman seminars?

there are freshman math seminars? ew

clearly I’m not very familiar with them, but as a rule the words ‘rigorous’ and ‘freshman seminar’ don’t go together.

There are some math seminars that are worth taking. 202 and its ilk.

I have to take one to be a math major, and if they’re not overly hard, I’ll take both to get some background on analysis and algebra.

I took Math202 with Gluck last semester. He’s an AMAZING professor – maybe the best I’ve ever had at any level (and he’s also one of the few notable members of Penn’s math dept.). It was also definitely the hardest math class I’d ever taken, since it was so different than anything I’d ever done before…unless you are EXTREMELY bright, you will have to work 20+ hours on HW for that class, but you’ll be glad if you do. The grading is pretty lenient. If you have any specific Qs about it, fire away.

My prospective schedule for next semester is looking like Math 114, Math 202, Chem 101 + Chem 53, Econ 001, and Spanish. Is this overkill?

Yes, it is.

Well, as a possible premed, I’d like to keep Chem, as a possible econ major I’d like to keep econ, as a possible math major, I’d like to keep the math classes, and as someone who wishes to graduate, I need to take Spanish at some point.

I need an advisor.

drop 202. 5.5 credits is too much for a first semester freshman. As a premed, you’re exposing yourself to too much GPA risk for no reason. You will have to adjust, and 4.5 credits is a perfectly normal courseload. Some academic advisors (the ones who care), won’t even let their students go to 5 credits first semester.

I’d say stick with what he said. Drop 202 indeed.

I’m starting to fear that there may not be enough time to take everything I wish to take. That’s irrational right?

4 credits is a joke.
