Math Department

Which school has the best math department: Lawrenceville, Middlesex or Choate?

I don’t know anything about Lawrenceville or Choate, but I was impressed with the math department at Middlesex (I have a kid who likes and is talented in math). We spoke briefly with the head of the math department at an open house.

A Middlesex student remaked in another thread that their Humanities department is much stronger than their Math. It’s the same at Lawrenceville. Choate is more known for the arts than Math (pm me if you want a link to a Choatie’s reflection on the school–it’s quite controversial and I don’t want to dig it up publicly). So I think there is no substantial difference between the schools–except at Lville, after having exhausted the school’s math curriculum, you have the advatage of taking courses at Princeton University down the road.

I can’t speak to the math programs at Lawrenceville or Middlesex, but I have in depth knowledge of Choate’s math program, and it is was ultimately us to Choate. There are a number of courses students can take beyond multivariable calculus, and if those are exhausted, some take courses at nearby Yale.

Last year, in the AMC12 (American Math contest – which decides who will qualify for AIME and ultimately, the USAMO team), Choate’s participating students scored the highest of all high schools in the country. https://www.choate.edu/mobile/index.aspx?pageaction=ViewSinglePublic&LinkID=4543&ModuleID=111&NEWSPID=1

The math talent at Choate runs deep, drawing top students from around the world — though this can make it difficult to be at the top as well. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.
