What is the most common math class for a first semester freshman engineering concentrator? Assuming a strong math ability - 5 on BC calc without difficulty. Thanks.

With a 5 on BC calc, you’ll have “credit” for Math 90 and 100. You should probably take Math 180 or 200 (200 is meant for Physics/Engineering people).

Course description for 200:
Covers roughly the same material as MATH 0180, but is intended for students with a special interest in physics or engineering. The main topics are: geometry of three-dimensional space; partial derivatives; Lagrange multipliers; double, surface, and triple integrals; vector analysis; Stokes’ theorem and the divergence theorem, with applications to electrostatics and fluid flow. The extra hour is a weekly problem session. Recommended prerequisite: MATH 0100, 0170, or 0190.

I really can’t figure out if the engineering department lets students with AP credit get out of 19. The Math Department thinks placement in 20 is appropriate, though. I’d talk to someone in the engineering department to find out if they would want you to take 19. Placement-wise, though, you have the background for 20.

I’ve got an engineer friend who had AP credit for BC and started in 20, so I’m assuming they’re fine with you doing that.

If you pass 20 it’s assumed that you don’t need 19. And BC definitely places you into 20. On the other hand, if you really really like math and want a tough, potentially interesting math class, there’s always math 35 to try out.
