Math II weighted equally as Math I?

I was wondering if Math II was really necessary if one wanted to get into schools like Wharton, NYU, UC Berkeley, UVA etc (with a finance maj), because I have started prepping for the Math II for the June test, and it seems like it is really difficult D: I just started calc in my IB hl math class, but I am struggling to remember trig and log concepts from way back (they are all in Math II), so I was wondering if I should just take math I, and if it would impact my application for the abovementioned top/ selective schools? plus I am in international student, so if that helps anything??

thanks

Depends on your major.

But for your top schools and math related majors , you bet your butt that you have to take it. Probably a great score as well.

Seems you are very prepared for it but just need a confidence boost with some review. Take some practice tests and see how you do. Then you can make your decision. This isn’t set in stone :)

@feliperios17‌ thank you so much for your encouragement :slight_smile: anyone else want to weigh in?

Stanford prefers Math2. Most Engineering and Science program do too.
Math2 covers more materials, however, it also has a much more generous curve. So at the end, one may get higher score in Math2 than Math1. You should try a couple practice tests on both and see which one you may score better. For Math2, you may skip 6-7 questions and still get 800. For Math1, you may need to get almost all correct answers for 800.

Take Math II. Colleges prefer it and it’s much better.

I got a 680 on Math I, but I got a 780 on Math II. This will explain what the poster above me was trying to say.

If you want to be a finance major, you def need to take Math II.

What would you guys say to a junior who wasn’t taken pre-calculus but has the summer to learn what I need and take the subject test in october?

I want to go to a UC and they recommended for engineering majors to take it.

thanks for the replies! so math 2 it seems… oh man im just freaking out over calc ;_;

Math level 1 is for the student who is on the normal (US) level of math, completing algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2 by the end of 11th grade. Math level 2 is for the student who is advanced, completing at least trigonometry and precalculus by the end of 11th grade.

You should still try both practice test to find out. Without trigonometry and precalculus, you will miss probably 10 out of the 50 questions. But you may still score higher in Math2 in some case. If you do some practice over the summer, you may even learn some of those before the real test. Anyway, taking SAT2 Math2 at the end of Junior would be the best time.

“I just started calc in my IB hl math class, but I am struggling to remember trig and log concepts from way back” Those are important concepts and if you’ve forgotten them you need to take responsibility for reviewing and relearning. What will you do in college when profs are using those concepts?

you are quite right… I should be remembering all these concepts. I have a terrible habit of learning something, and just keeping it ‘at the back of my brain’ once the test for that is over, and i only dig it back out when i really need it (in this case for the math 2)
