Math Major

I’m a second semester freshman interested in majoring in Applied Math, but I have zero computer programming experience and would be too behind to do a CS double major/minor. Can I still be marketable as a math major who doesn’t know how to code?

Have you considered electrical engineering?

As far as I know, Berkeley doesn’t offer an electrical engineering major, only electrical engineering and computer science, which is even more rigorous.

Are you planning on applying? What is your current GPA? You can be a math major without knowing to code.

Why would you be too far behind, especially if you did the minor? The minor is seven courses: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/minor.shtml

https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/AppMath.stm indicates that many applied math graduates go into finance, although taking CS 61A and 61B may be helpful in that context.

Thanks for the links, ucbalumnus!

Computerscix, I’m planning on applying to the the Applied Math major at the end of sophomore year if I do well in Math 110, and my current GPA is 3.9, but I expect it to drop this semester given that I’m not doing so well in Physics 7A

A lot of math majors go into Actuarial Sciences. Very stable career with a lot of growth. You could also go into banking, consulting, basically anything.
