Hi everyone,
I got accepted into math PhD program in MSU. I would like to hear what you guys think about this school.
So, I graduated from australia and my research interests lie in number theory and algebraic geometry. I hope to become a mathematician in the future. So far, I have got another offer from Berlin Mathematical School. I visited the school for an interview and received a scholarship. I need to know what you guys think I about MSU so that I can do a comprehensive comparison.
Thank you for your reply! Yes, i got a funded position guaranteed for at most 6 years. Basically, its a mix of TAship and fellowship. I hope to know more about this university. Will very much appreciate it if you could provide that information.
Michigan State has a good PhD program in mathematics. You can see the NRC rankings range here (http://www.chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124743). You should ask about placement rates and post-graduation outcomes of PhD alumni from the program.
What is your goal? If you want to work in the U.S., particularly as an academic, it may make more sense to go to Michigan State.
Thank you for the information! It seems that the NRC rankings are different from those more well-known rankings, for example QS rankings and the US news ranking. MSU has pretty low rank in the latter two ranking systems. I wonder if there’s any explanation to that.
I want to work in academia. I am not certain if this is entirely correct, but the job prospects in the US look better than germany.
@Stan93 - Michigan State has been a member since 1964 of the exclusive Association of American Universities. These are the most prestigious research universities in North America. There are only 60 members. Membership is by invitation only and requires a vote of 3/4 of the members. Only eight new members have been admitted in the last 25 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_American_Universities
