Math Questions Difficult ones

Kerry began lifting weights in January. After 6 months, he can lift 312 pounds, a 20% increase in the weight
he could lift when he began. How much weight could Kerry lift in January?
I get the answer but not really. Please clarify :D

0.2X + X = 312
1.2X=312
X=260

is that right?

the question tells you that whatever kerry could lift in january was increased by 20% to make it 312. This can be set up a few different ways. So you need to find the number that when multiplied by 1.2 (120%) will turn into 312

this translates into the following algebraic equation -
120% multiplied by x(whatever number) is equal to 312
1.2x=312
x=260
then solve for 260 as your answer

and i hate to break it to you but this isn’t considered a difficult question on the SAT math

@ jd989898 I was thinking the same thing… it isn’t even a hard question…
