Math Rec.

Does anyone know if Chicago requires or “requires” a Calc. class in highschool. I am a sophmore but by my senior year i need to choose between AP Calc. and getting my IB Diploma with IB Math Studies. I want to double major in Philosophy and Economics though i would want to focus more on the theoretical economics field.

Well, econ will require one to know a decent amount of math, and of course having a high school calc course under one’s belt when applying will no doubt facilitate the admissions process.

So you think AP Calc. is a better shot then a full IB Diploma.

I took 1 year of IB Math Methods and AP Calc ab.

IB was definately harder because we had to do more coursework and it was more official. In the end, math is math though. I don’t think it will matter. On the other hand, you are talking about Math Studies…I think you should go with AP unless you can take methods. Students who took math studies in my old school were simply horrible at math and thats why they took it. It was really easy from what I hear and I would assume that chicago will know the difference.

IB M Methods > AP Calc (ab) > IB M Studies.

I dont know about AP Calc BC though.

My school sucks and the teacher who was teaching Alg.2/trig had never taught the class before and so i changed into Alg. 2 instead. So next year i have to take Math Analysis instead of IB Math Studies. Then Senior year i can choose between going back and taking IB Math Studies to complete my IB Diploma or moving on to AP Calc. Those are the only options my school offers.

It’s not required, because I didn’t take any; the most that I took was pre-calc and I’m going in the fall.

For the econ students, the Calc placement exam (during orientation week) is very important, so I think it is important to know calc very well.

if It’s part of the IB system (I have no idea…), then get your IB thing.

Otherwise, you really should consider taking AP calculus.

Good luck!

oh crap- I haven’t taken any calc and I want to be a econ major- what should I do? A summer calc class or something?

Robertsont06-

Not to worry. Simply take calc during your freshman year, and you should be fine. In fact, I know a first year here who is planning on the math/econ major, and that is what he is doing.

I know I will be taking calc my first year, though I hope to place into honors, as I am considering math as a major. I took calc during my sophmore and junior years, and I have done no math this year unfortunately. Math is one of those ephemeral subjects; if you don’t keep it up, you loose it. That is why I now am reviewing one of my math book in preparation for the placement exam and so that I will be more firmly grounded in my math.

robertsont06,
you will take the math placement test during o-week and be placed into a course that does not assume any prior knowledge of calc. Then, you will learn calculus. Rather quickly, I would imagine.

If you want to take a calc course over the summer (maybe at lakeland) you could, but remember that Chicago gets kids with a wide variety of math backgrounds, and does get them all sorted out. I would suggest that you get a reasonable amount of sleep the night before the placement test.

Chicago has sequences for precalc and first-time calc takers.

White Rabbit -
I think that, for Chicago, you should take the best course of studies for you since one can make a case for the AP Calc or the IB Diploma.

does the calc placement test consist purely of calc or mostly math done before calc?
Because I’m in precalc honors now (should’ve been in Calc, but things happen when you move out of state to a new high school) and I recently purchased an AP Calc study guide to teach myself. I’ve done some calc outside of school, but never got very in depth into it or anything.

So…does anyone know what’s on the placement test?

Here is a thread that has information on the calc and math tests - as well as whether or not to prep for them.

If someone actually does prep for them - tell me about it and I will bring up cookies on family weekend. If you are actually that (academically) virtuous you deserve some sort of prize.

thanx all------- :)
