Math SAT help

Hi please help and explain if you can

Pat must pay a 6 percent state sales tax and a 2 percent city sales tax on school supplies. If the price of the supplies tax before taxes is $30.00, what is the total amount that Pat must pay In Sales tax?

A $0.25
B $0.90
C $1.80
D $2.40
E $2.60

2.
[||||||] divided by AA= AA
Box

In the equation above AA represents a positive two digit number in which both digits are the same. If the number that has been covered by the box is a three digit number, what is one possible value of the covered number?

A video store has 35 difference science fiction movies and 50 different action movies in stock. If Mike wants to rent one of these science fictions movies and one of these action movies, how many different choices of two movies does he have?

If a 2 digit positive integer A is represented by 10x+y where x is the tens’ digit and y is the units’ digit, then the number of integers between A and 10A (not including A and 10A) can be represented as…

A. 90x+10y
B. 90x+11y
C. 90x+9y-1
D. 90x+9y+1
E. 90x+10y+1

If a^2 > b^2 which of the following could be the values of a and b?
A. a= -5, b =0
B. a= -3, b=-4
C. a=0, b=-1
D. a=3/4, b=1
E. a=-1, b =-2

I thought it was either A or D since -5^2 < 0^2 and 3/4^2 is also < 1 so I’m not sure.

1 is D right since the total tax is 0.08 and 30 x 0.08 = 2.40?

No its C because they are referring to the “in state tax” not tax as a whole

It was asking for the sales tax in general not the states tax so I assumed it was talking of the total sales tax

For number five, you’re using the wrong inequality sign, A is correct. D should be read as (3/4)^2>1^2
.5625>1

1) $2.40

30(0.06) + 30(0.02) = 2.4

2) AA means two digit positive number where both digits are the same. Let’s use 11 (easiest/smallest number)

[llll] / 11 = 11

[llll] = 11^2

One possible value: [llll] = 121.

The only other possible value would be 22^2. Since any 33^2, 44^2 etc are all over 3 digits.

3) Counting Principal.

He needs one movie from each category.

First Category (Scifi): he has 35 to choose from.
Second Category (action): he has 50 to chose from.

Therefore choosing one from each category, without any other restrictions would be

35 options x 50 options = 1750 different combinations of two movies

4)

10a - a = 90x + 9y but this is the difference between 10a and a. We want the number of integers between them. So we just subtract 1.

Answer is C) 90x + 9y -1

Difference between 10 and 1 is 9… Number of integers between them: 8 (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)

Difference between 4 and 6 is 2… number of integers between them : 1 (5)

Difference between 5 and 6 is 1… number of integers between them: none.

See a pattern? I didn’t know how to explain it well, so I just gave you a few examples. It has to do with including or excluding numbers when subtracting or getting your final answer.

5) A is the only one that satisfies a^2 > b^2

A. 25 > 0 — true
B. 9 > 16 — not true
C. 0 > 1 — not true
D. 9/16 > 1 — not true
E. 1 > 4 — not true
