My D received her SAT Subject score today in Math 2. She scored a 650. On her reasoning test she took last spring she scored a 670 on the math section. My questions are as follows:

Will her 650 Math 2 score help for her fit schools such as Wake Forest and Richmond (A&S)? Help or harm for her reaches like Vandy & WashU?

Based upon her Math 2 score of 650, should she expect to raise her math section score of 670 on a retake of the reasoning test?

My son did better on the Math2 than the reasoning test, but the difference really wasn’t significant. If she wants to raise her score (for either test) she should get the Q and A service if it’s available and see what she got wrong.

A 650 SAT II math score is acutally in the 40th percentile due to the genorous curve of the exam. Unfortuanately, it is really kind of average and it probably wont make much of a difference at her fit schools, and could even hurt a little bit at her reaches. She may very well improve on her SAT reasoning, but this score alone doesn’t necessarily indicate that an improvement is likely.

It’s a self-selecting group that take Math2 instead of Math1, so the percentile doesn’t really tell you much. It stands to reason that a 650 in Math2 should be better than say a 700 in Math1, but I’ve never ever seen an admissions office that cared to give a clue as to how they weigh the math tests. (Though a few engineering schools insist on Math2.)

The pool of Math 2 takers are generally much stronger mathematically than the general SAT I takers. So while the percentiles are actually skewed, an 800 math 2 is more impressive than an 800 regular SAT.
