math sections

Taking 33A spring quarter with BUSCH, J.E. / BROSE, A.

I notice there are 2 sections of 33A capped at 120 students (sec 1 with GAMELIN and sec 2 with LAUB), and 3 sections capped at at 30 students (sec 3 with BUSCH, J.E. / BROSE, A, sec 4 with ESSER, J.E. / BROSE, A and sec 5 with SHIBER, D.C. / BROSE, A).

Am I missing something?
Why would there be large and some small classes of the same class?
Why would BROSE teach the same class 3 different times on MWF morning, instead of putting everyone together into 1 larger class?
I’m assuming it’s good to be in the small class???

DO NOT TAKE BROSE

tra la la

Why not, pink?

Roomie had a terrible experience with her with 3C.

Brose is irritable and teaches with German notation, and some of her policies show that she really doesn’t give a care about students’ learning. Check bwalk. If you’re still gonna take the risk, I have some anecdotes to share.

Well, seeing as how the other sections are all waitlisted (as is Brose’s), me thinks it’s a done deal. Does your roomie have any survival tips?

and why do you suppose the class sizes are so different? Is that common?

No, because she didn’t survive. She dropped out after nine weeks of torture.

I really don’t think it’s a done deal. Oh well. Just make sure you have 13 units excluding that class. ;)

My guess here is that the class sizes are small because TAs are the ones teaching the classes. So even though it says TA/BROSE, you probably won’t ever see Brose.

I could be totally wrong, though.

ouch for her. can’t drop it - major requirement and pre-req for 33B. Math 3C - she’s a life science person? Did she re-take 3C with someone else?

Brose will not be teaching any of the lectures. It will be Busch, Esser, and Shiber teaching 3, 4, and 5 respectively.

Each are graduate students holding the positions of Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. They aren’t experienced instructors (but don’t count them as unintelligent or discourage you form taking them). I don’t know the exact reason for attaching Brose onto the instructor list, but I am guessing because it is an administrative action.

They have done this previously in my courses where they attached a faculty head to the list while a new instructor was teaching. Do you kind of get that?

Phew. Yay for hiker!

Phew indeed (maybe). So sections 3-5 are kept small b/c/ they want the new grad students to have smaller, more manageable classes just starting out?

again, to emphasize others, DO NOT take brose

Why do you say that, bruinboy?

cause she’s (unnecessarily) hard, and there are easier ways to get 3C out of the way. If you want to save your gpa, just wait till she aint teaching…it won’t kill you (you don’t need 3C for ANY physics class. it is not an enforced requisite)

Okay, but it’s not for 3C, it’s for 33A. Sorry you had a bad time with her for 3A. You’re speaking from personal experience, right?

Boelter Hall says a TA Busch is teaching the course. We suspect Brose is listed with the TA name due to some sort of supervisory/administrative role, though not sure.

I thought 33A was a ‘recommended’ pre-req for diffeq, not a de facto prerequisite. Am I wrong?

You have to take the class for your major anyway, so in any case…

33B only requires 32A, and 33A is “highly recommended.”

33A is required for many engineering majors.

I am 99.8% positive. TA was probably an old position name; it could be something higher. :]
