Math & Stats scheduling: What would you do....?

My son is seeking my advice on two classes but I have no answers and hope you do. He will be a fall freshman.

He has never made less than an A in any honors or AP math or stats classes. However due to his ADD, his national test scores do not reflect his natural ability (per his HS teachers).

He has taken pre-calc but could never fit calc into his HS schedule (small school). I have no doubt he’s ready for Math 231 but his SAT II, ACT and SAT scores placed him just below the minimum required and into Math 130.

He also took AP Stats but was unable to sit for the AP exam. So, he was unable to possibly place in a higher level of STOR class. Can STOR 151 and/or 155 be challenged for placement?

Although he’s been on ADD meds since elementary school, I’ve never had him ‘officially’ tested although it’s blatantly obvious to friends, teachers and his doctor. He has started the testing process to get that ‘magical piece of paper’ so he can use the AD/HD services at Carolina.

His plan is CompSci major (possibly the 5 yr MS plan) and business minor. With the CS department’s ‘suggested scheduling’ plan, a math class with pre-reqs is required each semester, starting with Math 231, and all must be taken before he can declare his major.

I’ve read where several of you have said, “schedule first; ask permission later”. But, just how strict are the Math and Stats departments on your incoming national test scores? Would they take into account his ADD?

Basically, I hate for him to have to repeat (and pay for) classes he’s already had and I really don’t want him to have to attend summer school. If he starts with Math 130, summer school would be unavoidable.

So, what would YOU advise him to do? Thanks!

You should email the department, but I doubt that they will let your son take calculus. They are very strict about math and foreign language placement. There are emails at the bottom of this page for people you should contact: [Placement Information](http://www.math.unc.edu/for-undergrads/placement-info.html)

As for statistics, there is really no way your son can get any type of credit without having taken the AP exam. They do not take high school grades for any type of placement.

I can’t say what professors will tell you after you explain your situation, but I hope you can at least figure out his math placement.
