Are incoming freshman required to attend the matriculation? If so, what do we do at matriculation?

they say you have to go but it’s a waste of time. they basically make you sit with your college after walking up comm ave and say “welcome” which takes them about 1.5 hrs.

So far we haven’t rec’d any info on this at all, including where, when, or do we need tickets or just show up, etc. Plus will be there with my wife & younger daughter too. Not sure how excited she will be to sit through an hour & a half. When do we receive info on this? Are there any other activities, and if so are they just for students or are they combined. Seems like they like to do separate activities, wonder if it will be like orientation?

no one but the student goes to matriculation. you don’t receive info on it until you move in, usually there is a letter on your desk from the dean of students. there are no activities after matriculation except SPLASH, which is just a giant activities fair on nickerson field. not required either.

@BUBailey thanks very much for the info. Thought that it was some sort of an event with parents too. Not sure if my son would even be interested in attending it on his own.

Hi

My daughter is in the College of Engineering and she has already received a schedule for 9/3 and 9/4.

Parent convocation at 12pm in Agganis Areana
Matriculation at 1:30 in Agganis (schedule says it is mandatory)
Splash at 3pm.

Then she has mandatory stuff on Monday for the College of Engineering.

Many students who skip these mandatory sessions are the ones who will be complaining later in the year that “no one told me” when they have issues with registration, activities, internships etc.

I would go to Matriculation. It’s another college experience, which most students, despite it being boring, attend. You’ll be able to talk to the people sitting next to you, thereby making more friends. Also, there’s always bonding about how boring it is! This is the only time that you and your class will be together all together until graduation (for the most part). Plus, students go right to Nickerson Field for SPLASH directly after it is over.

Even though it was boring, it was still an experience I vividly remember, and it was almost a year ago for me. Parents–you really don’t have to attend. To be honest, your student is going to head right to SPLASH afterwards anyway.

Shiningstar91 is giving incoming students good advice! College is about more than classes and partying. It is a once in a lifetime experience and things like Matriculation only happen once. Seriously, what else are you going to do for that hour and a half, stalk facebook, twitter, some other website? Participate in your college experience, take the opportunity to meet some new classmates and enjoy this rite of passage! Good luck to all of you, have a great freshman year!

Will look for that schedule. Sounds like it should be a great experience for both of us.

Yeah, I agree that you should go as a student. It isn’t exactly the most exciting time ever, but the majority of the freshmen class does attend. It’s considered mandatory too, but really is just strongly encouraged. I think it’s a pretty cool experience to see the size of your class and do the walk down Comm Ave and all.

SPLASH afterwards can be fun too. Basically, every club invades Nickerson to have a giant advertising fair. While it gets a little overwhelming, it serves as a chance for you to get a glimpse at the many opportunities to get involved on campus. You might get information from one you really like, especially if you’re looking for a certain one in particular…and even if you don’t, you will get some free stuff.

splash is awesome. definitely go to splash. matriculation really is optional though they say it’s mandatory. looking back on it, now about 7 years ago, i only remember being nauseous from dehydration and being over-heated. i only went because i’m one of those ppl who think if i don’t go to some “mandatory” event that the world will come crashing down. there’s really not much better to do that day anyway, but if it’s ridiculously hot then you’ll be marching in the heat to a non-airconditioned building. i’m only bringing this up because i remember ppl who freaked out that they’d be in trouble for sleeping through matriculation since i think its like 8 am, but no one notices whether you’re there or not anyway. and if your family is still around you may want to spend time with them as you may not see them for a while after that. as tomsrofboston brought up, there are mandatory things you shouldn’t miss, but matriculation and splash don’t count in this scheme. the point that splash is right next door is a good one-you want to be one of the first ones there to get all the free stuff as it goes quickly.

on a final note though, whether you choose to go to matriculation or not, ENJOY EVERY SECOND of your college experience! it goes by in the blink of an eye, and my 4 yrs as a BU undegrad really were the best of my life.

yep, I enjoyed matriculation because I enjoy tradition, and it’s fun to walk down Comm Ave with the BU Band drumline playing you on and spending time with your new classmates. But if you don’t go, you’ll be ok. Agree with AliAngel…definitely go to SPLASH! It’s hands down the best way to find out about activities and clubs.
