Oh, the “Barbie Collector” stuff is priceless. They have all the Twilight characters, Mad Men, an insane looking Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka (or someone…), Carol Burnett wearing her Scarlett O’Hara curtains, it just goes on and on.

What’s the age range for Barbie dolls – about 5 to 8 or so? How do you explain the premise of the Hunger Games to a kid that age? Can you imagine what playtime would be like? Instead of dressing Barbie up to go out on a date with Ken, little girls will be dressing her up in her leather jacket and bow and arrow to go out and kill other kids.

What was Mattel thinking (besides $$, of course)?

These are BarbieCollector dolls, not the dolls that are going to be found at your local ToysRUs. Doll collecting is very popular and BarbieCollector is appealing to people who collect Barbies.

My MIL will want this one, I am sure. Most of these dolls will never come out of the box and will cost too much to allow a child to play with it.

My Mil was really into Barbies as well at least when my oldest was little. I had never had Barbies growing up but MIl thought it was important that D have a ten zillion piece kitchen set when she was three. ( she also kept giving her Barbie stuff when she was 12.)

I kinda worry about adults that collect “made to be collected” items, but if that’s how they want to spend their money…

I would rather see a bald Barbie myself.
[TODAY Health - Bald and beautiful…Barbie? Mattel responds to lobbying campaign](http://todayhealth.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/11/10122324-bald-and-beautifulbarbie-mattel-responds-to-lobbying-campaign)

Something I would like to see, especially if Mattel is going to release a Katniss doll (& will she be modeled after Jennifer Lawrence?.) is to release a Rue doll. Modeled after Amandia Stenberg. Then you might as well release a Effie Trinket doll- her outfits beg for it!

I would love that Rue doll myself, especially after reading about the horrible racist posts on message boards about the casting. She is such a beautiful little girl and I imagine it would be so much fun to have a doll made in your image at her age.

Barbie, unrealistically thin and starving? Who’d a thunk?

Mizzbee, I admit I was very surprised to read about that. Now I didn’t read the books so I didn’t have an idea of what the characters look like, but if anything I thought the racial mix of Panem was if anything much too white if we are to believe this is at some point in the future.

It also makes me sad that the young actor is being denigrated for the color of her skin. I think she did a great job.

First description of Rue in The Hunger Games:
I always assumed Rue was black.

So did I - that’s how I pictured her throughout the book. I don’t get all the controversy.

Not surprising really. People will buy anything. I’m amazed they haven’t come out with “Breast Cancer Barbie” yet. You know, with the pink ribbon and all…

Ahhhhem, surely you jest… there are (were) three:

greenwitch… OMG! Sorry, but that is just so exploitive… IMHO (of course)

Hey, don’t worry about offending me, I agree with you! One person’s exploitive is another person’s profit margin though, or so it seems.

Oh my, imagine a poor radiology tech, having spent years studying and working with women of all types, and then trying to give Barbie a mammogram…there isn’t equipment sturdy enough to…nevermind…
(had mine last week. Nineteen years cancer free!)
