We are long overdue for a mattress replacement. My back and neck keep reminding me. I’d appreciate other parents’ input. We started to test samples, but to be honest, I’m totally confused. Consumer articles say test each for at least 15 minutes. (We would be in stores forever at that rate). None feel particularly great – or bad – for the 10 (at most) minutes we try them. How can you tell what will be good for a 6-8 hour stretch?

I do know I don’t care for the memory foam or air types, but it may be because they just feel so “strange” after spending 1/4 of my life on traditional mattresses. I also know I prefer very firm support – but keep reading that is not advised for our older bones. Even sales people warn that while I may prefer a firm mattress in the store, I may feel differently in the morning.

So far, the Simmons individually pocketed coil mattress is winning. We liked the fact that it didn’t “bounce” when the other sleeper moved. But the coils are much lighter gage than most other mattresses designs, and from a “structural” viewpoint, I’m concerned they will bend and warp more quickly, without any interwoven ties. Does anyone have particular experience with these types of mattresses (pocketed coils)?

Have you recently purchased a new mattress? Any other recommendations?

TempurPedic. Purchased a year ago by my husband without ever lying on it, solely based on reviews (over the internet). I ADORE IT! When traveling, I miss my bed. We both sleep way better since we got it.

Another vote for TempurPedic. I tried it in the store and it felt “weird,” and I thought it was way too expensive, but H insisted on it. (We slept on a futon for 9 years and a regular mattress for another 9, BTW). After I got used to it (it is a little strange at first–hard to get out of because it is SO comfy and you feel like you’re pulling yourself out of clay) I just loved it–no back or joint problems since we got it 2 years ago. Another benefit–H is an “active sleeper” and I’m a very light sleeper–I don’t feel him thrashing around all night long like I used to–it is very quiet. Also, it doesn’t “bounce,” so that keeps the kids from using our bed as a trampoline. I wouldn’t want to have anything else.

Very timely thread for me, since I’m also looking at mattress replacement. I also don’t care for the memory foam type, and I thought that the TempurPedic was just that. Is it? While we’re at it, any suggestions for good pillows? I have the worse luck with them, it seems. I’m currently using a memory foam type that has pretty much turned into a hard wedge and I often wake up in the middle of the night with neck pain.

We bought a Select Comfort (Sleep Number) bed 6 months ago and we love it. It replaced our TempurPedic.

Select Comfort Pros - can adjust each side to your own comfort, can change softness/firmness at the touch of a button. My husband has neck pain when he sleeps and this helps alleviate it. Easy to move around. Cons - expensive sheets and mattress pads.

Why we got rid of the TempurPedic - lack of adjustability; plus it “sleeps hot” (retains heat), which was great for the winter but not for summer. Plus, very difficult to move around because it is bulky and on the heavy side. I probably would have kept it, but my husband’s neck pain got so bad that we had to try something else.

Another Tempurpedic fan here. We’d purchased Extra Firm spring mattress set and each suffered achy backs for about two years before realizing that the other was suffering too. We bought the Tempurpedic based on reviews (this was several years ago) and trying for a moment or two at Brookstone. It is wonderful.

A friend has purchased an imitation and likes it, but I don’t know how to sort out the worthless imitation from a good one.

PS Get the pillows, too. Very important for neck and headache issues. Actually, come to think of it, I purchased the pillow and used it for a week or more to try out the whole Tempurpedic idea. Perenially plagued by headaches upon awakening, I found the Tempurpedic pillow (funny shape and all) to be a godsend. I have a travel size one as well, and would never go anywhere without it.

We replaced an Englander latex foam mattress with the TempurPedic–because after five years the Englander mattress had a bad pair of matching imprints of each of us and a high ridge down the middle. I felt like I was climbing over a small hill to cuddle at night.

We turn ours every 6 months and have no imprints at all in four years.
We stayed at a hotel in Portland–The Benson–that has the Temp. beds. After one night we would never go back just due to the bed–and it is a great hotel.

we used to have waterbeds- maybe I should get one again?
I am actually thinking about a sleepnumber bed- because when we go camping I love the deluxe airbeds that I now insist on dragging along

( of course the waterbed was not so great for the 2nd purpose of the bed- I have heard similar re: tempur-pedic?)

I bought a memory foam mattress by Spring Air from Overstocks.com. They delivered it and set it up on the bed frame for $2. Yep, $2 total shipping and ‘white glove’ delivery. So far I love it.
