So, it’s true, I’m insisting that grad student son buy a NEW mattress/boxspring for his new apt. The thought of a second hand set that he would probably try to pick up on craigslist just makes me cringe.
BTW, all other second hand furniture is just fine in my frugal mom book…

So, any suggestions on cheap mattresses suppliers that worked out for you?
Does 1-800-mattres work? Costco? Sleepys?

I’m hoping just a phone call or click online and the bedding is magically delivered.
Too difficult and son will sink to an easier, uglier solution!

The other thing you can do…we went where DS was going to grad school and the first day went to a mattress place (where he could try the mattresses) that had SAME DAY delivery. His arrived by 4 that afternoon. But I will have to agree that Costco is a good idea too.

We are big Costco fans…good to hear that their mattresses are quality.

Yes, I might succeed with a mattress store trip…pretty difficult to know what you’re getting online. Son already has a fairly uncomfortable for everyday use futon, so we don’t need to recreate that.

Mostly, we believe in paying for quality. But we’re at the end of the footing the bill for son phase and good enough will be good enough.

S got his mattress at IKEA. So far, so good. He doesn’t expect to keep it FOREVER, but it has lasted two years and he’s planning on bringing it across country for his 1st job & apartment out there (employer will pay for moving expenses). He and his room mate both thought IKEA sounded more attractive than a used mattress.

Never really thought about it back in the day & didn’t get a new mattress until after I was all done with school & have moved into my own apartment and got tired of sleeping on a folding cheapo foam futon mattress. (Had a great back then & now.)

Yep- $2.95 for shipping. The mattress weighed 50 pounds. It took my son and one of his freinds to lug it upstairs. I got it during one of their cheap shipping deals that they have all the time.

Daughter loves the mattress and for $300 I couldn’t be happier with the price.

It is amazing some of the things that are shipped for cheap or free. We once bought a clay cooker that was shipped to HI for $5 or $6 or something. It cost them about $35 for my “free” shipping. I have to be sure whatever the deal is DOES include HI (have been burned a few times, including by our own federal government) on postage!

Good to know about overstock.com’s free shipping. Maybe we’ll suggest S look into getting a new mattress there & leaving his old one with D. I think he’s already thinking about that anyway.

my daughter also went for the Ikea mattress ( no boxspring since she bought a platform frame from Ikea too ) Just like to OP, I had no problem with the used furniture that she bought thru craigslist, but never a mattress

Yea, S & room mate each bought their platform bed frames at Ikea (no box springs). It’s a bit lower to the ground than they’re used to, but seems to work fine for them.

one other thing about Overstock- if you buy something and then notice a few days later that it has a newer sale price, you can get a refund of the difference. Daughter’s mattress was about $320 when I bought it. 5 Days later I was surfing overstock and saw her mattress at a lower price. I clicked the link to “chat” with them. Explained I purchase the mattress a few days ago and now it’s on sale, can I get the lower price? They looked into it and refunded me the ~$16! I think you have 10-12 days to get price difference refunds. It never hurts to ask…
