Mattress in Laf dorms?

Are they firm, soft, just right or something else?

I’m an incoming freshman and trying to figure out what mattress pad to get, but that depends on the type of mattress.

Per my son (Laf '11) the matresses are a mix. He’s had hard, soft, and in-between. One thing to keep in mind is that they are on plywood, not on springs, so that makes them firmer.

Most of them are firm, definitely never seen a soft one. I use an egg crate foam pad and I love it.

Thank you guys!

Also one more quick question: for the dorms that have closets, do those closets have doors, or just a curtain type thing covering it?

Depends on the dorm. Some dorms have wardrobes, which are like portable closets with doors. Others have a closet with a door (sliding doors in McKeen), while Reuf has walk in closets with no doors. The Reuf closets don’t come with curtains either, but a tension rod and a shower curtain work fine.

Once you get your room assignment I think you can go into the Res Life section of the website and see actual floor plans. Or you could come back here and see if anyone knows exactly what type of closet your dorm features.

Once you get your room assignment, just post it here and I can tell you everything you need to know about that room / dorm.

Not to thread jack but I want to ask a some what related question. Is it wise to go with the college’s linen program to order dorm supplies? From what I heard from friends they are sup par at best. And if I were to order them by myself and ship them, what would be a good way to do so? (I live in the west coast)

I just got assigned to South college, so any details on it would be awesome.

Lafayette has the floor plans online, go to:
[Residence Life at Lafayette College: Residence Hall Descriptions](Residence Hall Descriptions · Residence Life · Lafayette College)
Click on On Campus Housing, then Residence Halls, then Floor Plans and enter your Lafayette online signin to get the actual floor plans for South. Rooms in South vary, so it’s hard to give a general description. It is air-conditioned though!

The dimensions were helpful, but I still can’t tell if there’s a closet or not.

@ryanshoff, I know you were talking to Xnuclearlove, but I just found out that I was placed into PT Farinon house. Is there anything that you can tell me about that dorm?

I got into Ruef Hall. No A/C, no carpet. Doesn’t sound too exciting here.

My S lived in Ruef freshman year (and I lived there many years ago). He met a group of kids who lived there - guys and girls - that he is still friends with as a Senior. He said it turned out to be the best place he could have been. And it’s really convenient to Marquis dining hall. Every room in Ruef has 2 walk-in closets. They don’t have doors but if you bring a tension rod and a shower curtain it will close off the closet nicely.

@ xnuclearlove:
I’m gonna be living in South next year. It’s the biggest dorm on campus with about 230 kids staying there. It’s a co-ed by room, mix year dorm which means guys and girls live in adjacent rooms and there will be all 4 year years in there.
there are no closets, each person gets a table, a cupboard and a chest of drawers. the rooms in south are generally bigger than other rooms on campus. you’ve got a/c, carpeting and an elevator. south is right across from the econ building, the geology building and marquis dining hall and we have easy access to all other academic buildings on campus. there’s also a sound proof music practice room in south. Overall, its a great dorm. Gets a little loud sometimes coz there are so many people but nothing that can’t be handled.

@ Mare_Crisium:
PT is an all freshman, coed dorm with about 30 kids living there. There’s no carpeting or a/c but a rug and a table fan from walmart will solve that problem. No walk in closet either. Rooms are average size but the ceiling is a little lower so if you loft your bed, it might get a little difficult. the dorm has an amazing kitchen and some amazing lounges (because it used to a frat house before it became a dorm). PT is located near a block of dorms on one side of campus. Its a bit of a walk from all the academic buildings and from farinon so that gets a little irritating sometimes. The people living in PT always tend to get very close to each other and because of the small size of your dorm you will get to know everyone really well. PT also has a rivalry going on with Conway every year (which is located right across from PT)

Thanks, that’s really helpful.

So by cupboard do you mean armoire or is it literally just like a cabinet?
Oh and is the table like a little side table/night table?

It’s a full armoire with with a ton of hanging space and 2 drawers attached.
And by table, I meant an actual study desk. We don’t get side / night tables although I bought a set of drawers (the plastic drawer set you get at any department store) and I use that as a side table.
