My mattress is about 10 years old and it’s finally starting to give out so it’s time to start looking for a new one…
I am in bed a LOT of the time now because I’ve been so sick… that is probably going to be the case on and off for the rest of my life so Mr R and I are perfectly fine splurging for a nice mattress.
I want an adjustable mattress (one whose head part can be pushed up) and other than that I don’t really have any preferences.
I’ve looked into sleep number beds- are they worth it? What about Tempur Pedic? Mr R can comfortably sleep anywhere (I am jealous) so it’s all up to me and my preferences.
My BIL and sis have a sleep # bed that they are happy with. When I slept in one at a hotel, I honestly couldn’t tell much difference in the settings. If there is a hotel near you that has a sleep # bed, maybe you can see if you can get a deal on a one-night stay an unpopular time of year or date to try it out before deciding to buy.
I got ours from Costco and am fairly happy with it, but had to have nephews deliver because H and I couldn’t manage it. Price was good and it’s pretty comfortable.
Oh… good to note, BB. We don’t lose power that often but for whatever reason, the fuse to the part of the house with our bedroom blows all the time. We’ve tried a few things to fix that but no luck.
Can you buy a costco mattress if you’re not a costco member?
Romani, I just checked - apparently, Sleep Number fixed the issue with the power losses. But tread carefully. Those mattresses are not cheap. I would buy an expensive one only if I could return it, so that rules out most online sellers without a brick and mortar backup.
We just bought a sleep number bed from the sleep number store. You can try them all out at the store and they have lots of choices. You can also return it within, I think, 60 days. I don’t much care, but my husband says it makes a world of difference. It was expensive but not outrageously so. Try Costco and Sleep number and compare. It also has a 25 year warranty so if you think you need a new bed after 10 years, this would save you a lot. Sleep number also delivers and sets it up. Well worth it to me.
I help d my cousin buy a bed when her husband I’ll. they needed the adjustable frame. That was one set price. The mattress store sold returned mattresses for 50% off, so that helped a lot.
Their bed was not split. I wonder what those of you who have these beds think are advantages.
Not adjustable, so you may not be interested, but Walmart (yes, I know!) sells Spa Sensations memory foam mattresses that are high-quality at bargain prices. My husband and I have serious back problems and both sleep on these, as do my two adult children. A queen is about $350 and double about $250. We have the gel-temp ones as well as the regular. I would recommend going with at least 10" thick, depending on your preference, sheets, bed frame, etc. It comes in a box and weighs about 60 pounds. We also purchased the steel bed frames they recommend to fully support the mattress. We read the reviews, extensively, before purchasing the first about three years ago, and gave it a shot since our $2000 - $2500 Sealy Posturpedic mattresses were awful. We figured that it was worth a try since they were inexpensive. Our 20-year search for the perfect mattress is over! Now, when I return from a business trip I sink into a more comfortable mattress than I had in the hotel. It was always the other way around (except for the horrible Marriott Residence Inn mattresses, but that’s another topic!).
Friends had a Sleep Number and lived it for,the comfort. But…even with good mattress pads, the bed was always cold. This just didn’t work for them in New England so back it went!
I personally love my Tempurpedic. Ours is about 12 years old and really like new.
But you and Mr. R would boy need to like it…and it IS different than other mattress.
We had a relative who was confined to bed for health reasons. This was when tempurpedic first came out…and that is what they bought for her…for comfort. It molds to your body.
Sleep # beds are cold??? Sign me up. I will have to check them out. I hate our foam top mattress, I am awake several times a night because I am alway hot. I bought cotton sheets and sleep with just a sheet and have a ceiling fan running. My husband however, has sheet, blanket and comforter on. Maybe I could buy a sheepskin to put on the mattress on his side of the bed?
Perfect timing @romanigypsyeyes ! Our 20 year old mattress needs to be replaced but I keep putting it off. We bought our youngest son a Novaform memory foam mattress from Costco on sale for under $400 when he was diagnosed with a form of arthritis that affects his spine/hips. He’s had it for 7 years and loves it so much we bought him the same one last year to use at school. He says it distributes his weight so that there is no pressure on his hips. It’s not split but maybe you could look at something similar with the features you want.
I love the support of his mattress, but I get so hot on the foam. Anyone out there who has the gel layer on top of the foam have any input? Does it really help keep it cooler and is it comfortable??
@takeitallin Yes, the spa sensations mattress I referenced has a gel on the surface and it is cool. I am the queen of hot flashes, so I can vouch for this!
^^@baseballmom, if the Spa Sensations memory foam mattresses are only sold online, is there no way to test them out? Are they returnable? I’m asking bc D2 will need a new set when she moves this summer. This will likely be her biggest purchase since graduating last spring and settling in a new city with her new job. She’s already asked me how to go about it and is concerned with cost so your recommendation caught my eye.
We bought a sleep number split king adjustable last month. I was skeptical, but love it. More money than I wanted to spend, but H talked me into it. Our power goes out regularly and no loss of inflation this last time.
We had to get a mattress for our new vacation place and what we ended up with is great for H, but I am pretty uncomfortable in it. It takes a couple of nights before I can sleep through. The SN works great from aspect.
A tempurpedic/memory foam was the alternative, but H sleeps very hot, so we didn’t want to chance it. Our default is sheet, blanket, and duvet cover (no duvet) so he stays comfortable while I have to pile on extra - I didn’t want to end up with no covers at all.
We looked at mattress review sites as well as consumer reports to get an idea of how things work in real life.
The adjustable bed is the one non negotiable part. I tried the elevated head of mattress thing when I was trying to control my GERD and it was a pain. I just want a remote controlled adjustable bed. I read in bed constantly and I know it’s a strain on my back.
-Hot or cold mattresses don’t bother me. If it’s warm, perfect. If it’s cold, my dog is a furnace and sleeps up next to us.
We bought a Tempurpedic with an adjustable base 3 years ago. It is a king, so you make the bed with two extra long twin fitted sheets (each side adjusts independently) and a king sized top sheet and comforter. It is the best. I like the fact that the foot of the bed adjusts as well because raising your knees helps so much with the low back when the head of the bed is also elevated. I have had a cold this week, so just raising the head of the bed on my side a few inches has helped my sinuses. It is nice to have the two sides operate independently because it is nice and quiet so I can adjust to read a bit after my husband is asleep. Good luck with your mattress search!
