Mattress recommendations?

Well we decided on the sleep number. Specifically the iLE because I really like the pillowtop. We get it delivered in a week

Yippee! Please report back how it works out for you, as many folks are currently in the hunt or may be in the near future.

Of course!

I’ll list a few things I learned (which may have already been mentioned so apologies for duplicates):

-The bases come in three types: 1, 2, or 3. 1 is just a flat, regular base. 2 is head & foot adjustable. 3 is adjustable plus a massage feature and lights around the bottom of the bed. We went with 3 because the massage feature released some of the tension in my joints but it’s really not necessary and not a particularly good massager (it’s more like a vibrator). I don’t think it would be useful for most people.

-Anything below a king doesn’t allow for individual side head and foot adjustment. We’re getting a queen so if my side goes up, his goes up. Luckily this isn’t a problem for us as he can literally sleep comfortably sitting straight up (yes, I’m still jealous), it’s something worth noting.

-Most models are pillow top and the level of “plush” goes up as the price/model goes up. There is also a memory foam model. I didn’t care for it (for me, it felt kind of like quick sand) but Mr didn’t mind it. It would probably be pretty comfy for those who like the foam.

-Wait for a sale. This was advice I got from reviews on the SN beds. The iLE only comes out twice a year and is half off for like a week. They also have decent discount deals if you start bundling things together. For me, a mattress protector is important and the purchase of the mattress protector + 2 pillows ended up coming out with essentially a (very nice) free pillow and then about a half off pillow.
— I followed the prices for a while and yes, there is always some type of sale going on but some are definitely better than others.

I’ll let you know how we adjust

Initial thoughts on the sleep number bed. We got it Thursday morning but I’ve been using it pretty continuously since then as I’m still on and off pretty sore and it is now the most comfortable piece of furniture in my house lol.

-The set-up and delivery was super easy. The delivery men were here less than an hour, got it all set up and walked through everything with me. Very nice and I left them raving feedback.

-The modular base is a godsend. It’s very movable and you can sit almost straight up when the back is fully up. This is what I was hoping for and some of the other modular bases (from different companies) didn’t go up quite as high.
—Also, the raising the top and feet both is quite nice especially since a lot of my pain is in my lower back, hips, and knees. Adjusting both lets me take pressure off these areas even as I’m sitting up and reading.

-We’re both still trying to find our ideal sleep number but I find that my needs shift throughout the day. When my meds are starting to wear off, I go down to a lower number and when they’re working I go to a higher number for more support. I think I would’ve liked slightly more of a pillow top but A) that should be less of an issue when I’m not in bed all day and B) I can buy a pillow topper thing if I really want to at some point.

-The whole adjusting thing really does stop snoring. Every time Mr R starts snoring, I raise the head up a little bit and poof the snoring is done.

-At least in this base (I think it is only this base), there are lights underneath the bed and plugs on the sides of the beds that can be controlled with the remote. So I have my night time reading lamp plugged in which is awesome because I normally have to fiddle to find the button to turn it on (the kind on the cord not the light itself). Mr R has his laptop and phone plugged in on his side and I have the light and my phone plugged in on my side (laptop plug reaches easily behind the bed.

-The massage feature, IMO, is probably pretty useless for most people. It’s really just vibrations and I use that to help when my joints are starting to feel stiff and it works. No idea why but I’m not complaining.

-I’m still trying to figure out the SleepIQ technology and to be honest, I just don’t get it. I haven’t really put much effort into it but since I’m in bed all day anyway it seems pretty useless (it doesn’t seem to distinguish between being in bed and sleeping.

So far, I’d say it’s worth the price (just over 5k for everything including a mattress protector and two pillows) and I’m pretty satisfied. I’ll update again in a few weeks in case anyone is considering this type of purchase.

Thanks for all your feedback. Depending on how things go with loved ones, we may be in the market for a new bed at some point too.

Oh yes, a few more things.

-They provide interest-free financing for up to 18, 24, and more months depending on how much you spend. We did it partially in a one-time payment and partially financed over 24 months. I’m not at all worried about paying it off but it is nice to have it spread out.

-Sheets are a PITA as you’d probably expect with a modular bed lol. We have super deep sheets from our last bed and they still don’t cut it. We need to fix the corners several times a day. It looks like we might actually have to buy through the company. Again, this probably isn’t nearly as big of an issue with people who are primarily using their beds just for sleeping.

-You can exchange pillows for free for up to 30 days and the bed after 30 days (I think you have to pay for S&H or something) and up to 90 days.

We have the queen sized bed which doesn’t allow for one side of the bed to go up and not the other. This is perfectly fine for us because, as I’ve said, Mr R can sleep anywhere and anyhow lol. The king size and above allows for the split top.

I think the sheet problem may be because the head of the bed is raised up and down. My bed has no problems with sheets however DH adjusts his up and down and also the foot of the bed. His sheet corners come off on a semi regular basis. Before we got the adjustable base he had no problem with the sheets.

^ Yup! Sorry if I didn’t convey that clearly. If the bed isn’t moving much, the sheets are fine. It’s the constant adjusting that makes them come off.

You can buy “sheet garters” that hold the corners of the fitted sheets in place. Here’s an Amazon link, but they also have them at BB&B.

We love our latex mattress. We bought 3" sections separately. I have firm and medium. H has medium and soft.

@baseballmon- I am finally getting ready to order the mattress you recommended- the reviews are great. Even if it ends up not lasting as long as a regular mattress w/ box springs, I could replace it in 5 years and still come out ahead. One question- I notice that the WalMart website shows the Theratouch which has a 3" layer of ventilated air cool foam (no gel), as well as a “MyGel” Spa Sensations mattress that has a gel-infused foam layer. The gel mattress appears to be new and doesn’t have any reviews. I believe you said that you have the Theratouch mattress and that it keeps you very cool. I am leaning towards that one as I do see some negative comments in general on gel mattresses. Can you confirm which one you have ? Also thanks for the input as I never would have looked at these before reading you comments. We have some of the NovaFoam Mattresses from Costco and I love them but they are too hot for me. Their new one with the gel layer has a lot of negative comments from users. The Theratouch seems to be a good compromise. Thanks for your help!

@romanigypsyeyes Now that you are about a month in on your new mattress, are you still loving it?

We have SN mattresses - two queens and one single - 15+ years and definitely time for new ones. Yes, we’ll buy SN again.

One thing no one has mentioned (I don’t think) is the ease of changing sheets. The mattresses are light enough to handle easily. I’m always surprised when I change the sheets on the one regular mattress we have: I can’t easily lift it to tuck sheets in.

Should be an added plus for you, Romani.

Yes, what @ignatius says is very true. Though Mr. R makes the bed most of the time… lol

I did get the sheet clips to keep the sheets on. Not the exact ones mentioned up thread but very similar ones. They’ve worked wonders.

I still really like the SN. The ability to adjust the mattress up and down has probably been my favorite part, though the ability to adjust the firmness is definitely a great thing too. Surprisingly, I think Mr R has been even more enamored with the bed than I am. Which is weird because, again, his motto is: “If I fits, I sleeps!”

There’s no negatives that come to mind. Although I usually sleep with the head and feet part up a little bit creating a dip in the middle of the bed. This is great for comfort but it’s a pain when I have to get up and the dog rolls into the dip and refuses to move :stuck_out_tongue:

I have found the sleep IQ to be completely useless and that’s my only regret. Since I’m in bed most of the day, it isn’t useful. I don’t think Mr R has looked at it all either. It might be useful for others, but not for me.

Just want to thank @baseballmom for her recommendation. Ordered online for DS for his first apartment, and delivered within 3 business days to his door (window was 3-6 business days). We went with the Sams Club version of Zinus mattress, Night Therapy Gel 10". Zinus also makes WalMart’s Spa Sensations that baseballmom recommended. The Night Therapy mattress had a thicker gel layer.

DS absolutely LOVES it! He’s slept on our T-pedic but couldn’t take the heat. This mattress’s gel layer keeps him cool and the support is just like T-pedic’s.

And a great low price!

This thread popped into my mind so I figured I’d update.

The bed is still doing pretty well. I’m still in love with the fact that I can put it in pretty much any position I want and that I can adjust it based on my pain days.

There are a few weird things though:
-The mattress is now kind of curved up in the head of the mattress. I’m pretty sure it’s because I have the stretchy clip things on there to keep the sheet on. So even when the bed is “flat” it’s still elevated a bit. Which is fine for us because I prefer sleeping with it up a little anyway for heartburn and comfort. I don’t even think it would be noticeable to most people.

-Every once in a while, the frame creaks a bit when adjusting it. It doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to when it does it.

-Mr R and I sleep at a very soft setting and that does kind of make the bed have a mound in between us. It’s not a big deal but it is worth noting. When it’s at a firmer setting, that mound disappears.

-Sleeping with a dog in the middle of the bed is still a PITA but that has nothing to do with the bed :stuck_out_tongue:

If it makes any difference, my parents’ dog went on the bed for the first time today (it’s the first time she’s been at our house since I got the bed). This dog is afraid of her own shadow. I’m really not exaggerating. The movement of the bed frame didn’t bother her at all. I was amazed. I thought it would scare the life out of her.

Bumping up to ask a question (the other thread reminded me that I made this one).

I have started to wake up really achey. I’ve tried all sorts of different settings but nothing is working. Mr R is still doing fine, but I’m thinking I want to try a mattress topper of some sort. I’m wondering if anyone has tried any of the ones actually through the sleep number store.

Mr R sleeps hot and I will come winter since the dog has started demanding to sleep under the covers with us so I’m thinking of trying the cooling one: https://www.sleepnumber.com/sn/en/Bedding/Mattress-PadsToppers/p/layer-CF

@romanigypsyeyes, can you try it out at the store nearby to see whether it is as you expect? Foam tends to make me very uncomfortably HOT and that would make me wonder how it can be cool. Best of luck–hope you find something that suits your needs.

Went mattress shopping today. Just want to see if anyone has any experience/knowledge of the Spink & Edgar brand? Natural mattress, very comfy, 20 year warranty, just became available in the USA in the past year or so, not finding much review info on line at all although the company has been in business for awhile in the UK.
