I know it’s been discussed before…but looking for ideas for a firm mattress that sleeps “cool”, if you will. I think that means latex not memory foam. Husband thinks sleep number bed is the way to go but I’ve heard/read too many negatives. Our weight differs by almost 100 pounds. Thanks for suggestions for actual items or manufacturer.

We have a latex topped mattress that is pretty firm, never even feel it when dh turns over. It’s made by Simmons but can’t remember the model name. We’ve had it four or five years and are very satisfied.

I’ve been shopping for twin mattresses for a guest room. I’ve read rave reviews on the memory foam mattresses on the Sam’s Club website.

We have sleep number and love it - frankly I can’t see needing to ever buy another mattress since we can refluff the bed by reinflating it, I don’t need to flip anything over or turn it to make sure there’s not overwear (dents). If my back is hurting for some reason I can readjust the firmness. We’ve had it for about 10 yrs and it’s good as new.

I’ve had a sleep number bed for about 13 years and love it. I am totally spoiled and have problems ever sleeping away from home. Mine is a king with dual chambers so we can keep each side of the bed adjusted the way we prefer. I like it very soft and my husband keeps his side fairly firm. No problems here but wonder if the newer versions are made as well as the older ones.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Any problems with the sleep number bed being “too hot?”
Or maybe not having the fabric combination that encourages sleeping “cooler?”
I assume with the sleep number you must have the specific frame/support? Is the headboard I see in the ads an integral part? Obviously I need to go to a store.

My sleep number bed looks like a regular mattress and box spring. It sits on my traditional Ethan Allen 4 poster bed frame just like any other bed would. You can use any box spring but I bought theirs. My mattress has a pillow top and unless you unzip it, you would not know about the workings inside. I do not have any latex or memory foam and it doesn’t sleep hot at all. The hose exits at the top of mine and the pump sits on the floor under the bed…out of sight. I have a wireless remote control to adjust the level of inflation.

In my son’s room we have a less expensive sleep number bed without a pillow top. It sits on a platform bed so no box spring is needed. He has been happy with it but mine is more comfortable.

The one reason I’m sorry I bought a pillow top mattress is that it does “sleep hot”, at least to me. The soft stuffing kind of cuddles up around you. I recommend you try actually sleeping on one for a night (not just trying it out in the store) either at a friend’s or at a hotel, where they are becoming ubiquitous. Pillow tops also do flatten out over time from body weight. After 5 years, ours is starting to look more like a lumpy mattress than the high end product we paid so much for.

I have a Serta Perfect Sleeper and it’s wonderful… I bought it about 3 or 4 years ago. It is very plush and has a very thick pillow top. I sleep so well on it… it’s definitely not the right bed for a ‘firm’ bed sleeper. :)

Just a word of caution on any mattress you decide to purchase. Make sure it comes completely sealed in plastic, with no holes or tears. I just bought a new mattress and boxspring from a local company and saw bed bugs inside the plastic, so refused delivery. This will continue to be a problem, as long as companies haul away old mattresses.

Older s just went mattress shopping and found wide variances in pricing. Also, you can’t easily compare apple to apples, b/c the companies change the model name for different stores, so just look at low end, middle and top of the line. I think he ended up with a Simmons pillow top. Many moons ago I got a Serta perfect sleeper-- its now in our guest room but its been great. If you have one of these stores near you [The Original Mattress Factory](http://www.originalmattress.com/) I highly recommend them. They make them to order on site, have handles built in so you can flip the mattress relatively easily and they have the true double sided mattress, which many do not. We bought our last mattress from them and love it!

I don’t understand why it is still legal for these companies to carry discarded bedding on the same truck as the new bedding. The bed bug problem is epidemic in many areas of the country and is only going to get worse.

ewww, bed bugs in the plastic wrap? ewww… My sleep number has the pillow top but not the expensive one, we opted to the lowest cost one which isn’t as thick - I don’t know about it “sleeping hot” - it doesn’t seem any different than any other mattress we’ve had.

I stayed at a hotel with a new sleep number bed. I liked it We have a latex foam bed now–very frim–and I’d like to go a little softer on “my side”. Sleep number is on the list when the time comes.

Another vote for the sleep number bed. H needs a rock-hard bed or he gets a back-ache. I prefer medium-soft. The sleep number bed is perfect, we’re both happy. We’ve had ours for several years with zero problems. Bluejay, I think you should reconsider, especially since you pointed out the 100 lb difference in your weights. Ours does not sleep “hot” or cold. I supposed the softer you set it, the warmer it would feel, since it would envelope you a bit.
