Mattress Topper

@homerdog I have the same concern about the memory foam being hot. Reading reviews on various brands, this seems to be a common complaint but I’m sure it varies person to person. I’m going to stick with a non-memory foam mattress topper instead especially not knowing how his room temperature will be.

Warning! Do not open a memory foam topper before you transport it to the dorm unless you have plenty of vehicle space. They expand quite a bit.

DS has used the Costco novaform for 3 years and loved it. Moving up to a full bed in his apartment though so will not use for a 4th. He passed it on to a fraternity brother rather than try to transport it home this year.

Incase you are still shopping, we bought at least 3 or 4 of these over the years sending all the kids to college with one. Loved it. $59.99 and they don’t have a smell when opened and can go right on.

First post in this forum since the (disatrous) update!

This one is on the pricier side but works great on our guest bed!

It comes in 2 inch, too.

I have a few more days to obsess over this. We’re heading to orientation mid week and she needs to spend a night in the dorm. Hopefully D will have an opinion of how high I can make that mattress. With pad and topper she’ll be adding 4 more inches.

Leaning towards https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JKK9HB2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9? smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 since it all comes together and will save me the “now which pad do I choose” conundrum I also like the Sleep Innovations 2" topper.

I haven’t seen any nice featherbeds that fit XL, aren’t insanely expensive and have good reviews. Online shoppers seem to like the memory foam better.

@BunsenBurner We recently bought a new mattress for ourselves and I considered that brand. I might still get the latex topper for an old guest bed.

@houndmom

Has your daughter ever slept on a memory foam anything? Or just her featherbed? Have her do that before you spend a nickel on a memory foam topper.

My DD hates…HATES memory foam. She tried ours before we even went shopping for mattress toppers. We found XL synthetic feather toppers at Target. That worked for her.

Lots of XL twin feather toppers at Amazon.

Have you tried Kohl’s? This synthetic down topper is XL twin.

I wouldn’t worry about it being XL if it’s a one piece topper and then you’re putting a mattress pad on top. 5 inches difference just balance it out top and bottom for a couple inches either side.

@thumper1 I’m not sure D has slept on memory foam, and I have wondered if she would like it. I’m sure a night or two wouldn’t be a problem, but I don’t want to find out a week into school that she hates her bed.

@abasket My options will open up significantly if I can just order a regular size twin feather bed. Although I may have found an XL one at Walmart.com https://www.walmart.com/ip/BYB-Bafflebox-Duck-Down-Featherbed-Twin-XL/256751630

I feel like the issue with the feather beds is that they flatten out after just a few months. I seem to be reading that over and over in reviews. I still may get one and, if it doesn’t last, then have a foam or gel pad sent to him later. He is not picky. I’m sure I’m overthinking this because I’m trying to stay useful to him and getting his stuff ready for school is something he’s asked me to help him with!

Clearly all products are not made equal, but with 3 feather bed purchases we have made - they lasted through 4 years each and then post college are being used occasionally at our vacation place. I can recall one of them being worn in one spot (like the feathers moved out of place) but we just put that at the foot end of the bed. And that’s after a 4 year stint in a dorm room.

We have the egg crate topper/memory foam thing at our summer place. I do not even notice the “egg crate” effect any more. Very cool. At home I bought a regular memory foam topper and it is very hot. OK, in the winter, but I find myself waking up in the middle of the night right now to turn down thermostat to coll the house down. arrggh. Wish I had bought the egg crate one for home too.

The egg crate ones look so bizarre. Do you guys think that style is cooler since there’s less surface area?
