I’m looking online for a mattress topper for Twin XL dorm bed … there are approximately a million choices! Any suggestions? And did you use a mattress pad on top of topper?
Of course, I’m looking for the perfect blend of comfort, price, easy return, etc.
Older S just had egg crate style, but that never looked comfortable to me. D says she’s not choosy, but those dorm beds can be rocks and she sure seems to enjoy her featherbed at home.
We bought D’s mattress topper at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It’s was a mid priced memory foam one that I think came to around $100 after the 20% discount. D LOVES it and says it makes a huge difference on her bed. We also bought a plushy mattress pad to go on top.
Just checked quickly on amazon and unexpectedly found this…I bought a similar one for my first child (circa 2015)…she loved it, and I wasn’t able to find it for my second but I guess it’s back ? it’s awesome…foam base with cushy padding all in one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JKK9HB2/ref=twister_B07JK9BGW4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I found great bargains at TJ Maxx and Home Goods. I bought a mattress “bag” - I don’t know the real name?? you zip the mattress in it to protect again bed bugs and stuff. Then I put the gel topper then a mattress cover! LOL probably overboard, but bed was nice and comfy! Also got the sheet clips from Walmart so that the sheets didn’t fall off from all the layers of mattress padding!
The Amazon one as stated in post #6 is what I got, though it was for a cheaper price. My kid wound up not using it, it was a bit too soft for his taste plus it made the bed too high. But it is really nice, we actually use it in a futon at home.
Our three kids all had a feather type bed and loved them. We use them now at our cottage and D2 kept hers to put on her futon for extra comfort for overnight guests.
We got ours at BBB.
Our bed making went like this:
Zipped plastic mattress pad
Feather bed
Mattress topper
Fitted sheet
Flat sheet
blanket
Comforter/quilt
One note - if your student is going to bunk their bed, be sure that there is a tall enough bed rail. Sometimes with the mattress topper, pad, and all the extras, the be rails aren’t tall enough to do anything.
We bought a 2 inch memory foam topper for D in 2013 and she used it until she graduated (it lived in storage while she did a junior year abroad, so she got 3 years out of it.) Our son wanted a super comfortable topper, so we got a 3 inch. It was great his freshman year, but then it split into pieces after he stored it all summer, so we had to buy a new one. My advice: read the reviews about how long these things last. All of them are comfortable a few months in, but what you want to know is whether the reviewers still love them in a year.
@abasket when you say mattress topper do you mean a mattress pad? I do like your idea of a feather bed instead of a gel or foam topper. Any suggestions on one of those?
If she likes her featherbed…why aren’t you looking for one of those for her bed in college? It could be real feathers or synthetic. We have a fake featherbed topper on our spare bedroom bed, and everyone loves it.
S19 currently has a foam pad. He’s not picky and likes it but it seems hot to me and it starting to look a little gross. I think I’m going to look for a feather bed instead but I hope I can find one in twin XL and I hope it’s cushy enough on the hard beds!
For anyone who was planning to purchase the Costco memory foam mattress topper linked earlier in this thread, the twin XL is out of stock. Looks like a few places (Amazon, Sams Club) are out of stock for the most highly rated ones in twin XL.
The memory foam doesn’t appeal to me but D17 loves hers (got it at BBB two years ago). I’m not sure S19 will like memory foam. When I asked him what he wanted he said he didn’t care. Right now he has something from IKEA on top of his bed at home -I noticed IKEA doesn’t sell the same one anymore so I may just have him take that one. I was hoping to get him the Costco one or equivalent now so he could try it first, but since that doesn’t look possible, I may let him take the one he has. I’d hate for him to have something he ends up hating b/c he’s playing a fall sport and will need something comfortable.
OOPS! Editing to add that I thought I was posting in the Class of 2019 where someone a few days ago included a link for a Costco mattress topper. Just realized I was posting here and not there!
