mattress topper?

Is the more expensive memory foam worth it, or is an egg crate okay? Also, can anyone suggest any good brands of memory foam toppers? There seems to be quite a large range of price and quality available. Thanks!

AND, can anyone tell me where to find twin xl mattress covers appropriate for a kid with dust and dust mite allergies that doesn’t cost a small fortune? One that doesn’t squeak and crack with every little move? (Had one of those on a regular bed…unbelievably noisy.) Thanks!

Mattress covers - Go to companystore.com. They have a zipper cotton one and maybe some others in twin XL.

Home Goods has mattress covers in twin and twin XL for $9.99. They are the cotton ones as well.

“Is the more expensive memory foam worth it, or is an egg crate okay?”

I would recommend to start out with egg crate, as it’s at least 10 times chipper. If it’s not good enough, get the memory foam on fall break.

I think Domestications has an online store now. They have several matress toppers in their most recent catalog and S is looking them over. They are reasonably priced and can be sent straight to his dorm, so that’s why we are considering them.

Do you really need a mattress topper? Are dorm beds THAT uncomfortable? I’m just wondering whether I should buy one…I guess I’ve been spoiled with a good mattress because I’ve never used those eggcrate things.

My S is currently staying in a college dorm. No mattress topper and so far, he has not complained or demanded an eggcrate mattress.

On the subject of eggcrate mattresses and memory foam, a firefighter posted about the risk they present. It’s not just that they are highly combustible but that they emit noxious fumes. I think his posts are in the sticky thread at the top.

Wouldn’t just a cotton mattress pad be good enough? That’s all I bought.

If the mattress is in good shape, certainly a cotton mattress pad is good enough. That’s what we’ve provided S, so that his bedsheet is not right smack on top of a plastic covered mattress. I will wait until S tries out the mattress in his dorm room before springing for an eggcrate mattress or featherbed, or memory foam…

We got a free pillow with a memory foam mattress. The smell is noxious; I can’t use it.

Marite, any idea when the roomie assignments go out?

I think they’re supposed to come out around mid-August. Doesn’t it feel like waiting for the thick envelope all over again?

As for the 299 posts, Cafe postings don’t count; it’s too allow us to have as many drinks in the Sinners’ Alley as we wish without upping our count.

:)
DS will be happy to hear that.

Get the egg crate. It’s not expensive and you can just ditch it at the end of the year. The memory foam ones are MUCH more expensive. DS said that the egg crate covered with a nice mattress pad (and sheets) made the bed just fine. His university covers the beds with plastic so if you don’t have some foam topper you will not be happy.

check out sears, they have cotton xl mattress pads and xl egg crates, and if you’re going to get the egg crate get the mattress pad, it helps to keep it the egg crate on the bed

I found a memory foam at TJ Maxx (I think) for about $30. He says it’s been great. We left it outside for 3 or 4 days to let it air out as it did smell. The sunshine worked wonders.

Last yr I had the same question. Carolyn had let me know that the mattress are so bad at Redlands that some kids brought their own. I tried a cheap egg crate from target on son’s bed at home. It was ok, but not great. Costco has memory foam with a cover for about $100, maybe $79-I forget. It is a little short but son says with his head on the pillow everything is ok. It is wonderful. His college mattress truly is terrible-looks like it was bought about the time I was in college. The foam is so nice that I bought one for us. When I was shopping around the best price was around $80 w/o the cover. I really think you need the cover. I also bought a nice quilted mattress pad this is extra deep(it think that’s what it is called–it is deep enough to cover the mattress and the extra foam). Right now son is sleeping on the egg crate and foam-easiest way to store the foam. He also loves the foam pillow-he was bringing it home on holiday till I just bought a second one for home.

We found 3/4" memory foam, XL, at Target for $20. Don’t know if it smells or not–quess I better go find out so we can air it out!

Oh, I forgot about the smell. Need to air it out if the smell would bother you.
