mattress topper?

I bought my son Danny a memory foam topper from www.selectfoam.com . I did some extensive research on this because I have heard of all the fire hazard rumors and with that dorm building fire in the northeast and all, I was very worried.
What I found out was this: with memory foam it is best to go with a 5.3 lb foam because it will last longest. Ideally you should get a cover because without a cover the foam tends to oxidize and contracts heat when you’re sleeping on it. Danny is going to Clemson and is trying to play football so as you can imagine he is a big boy, so we got him the 4 inch topper. The company shipped it out quickly and they had the twin xl which is a tough size to find for $289.

Does anyone know if these schools are going to start offer better living accomodations for these students?

A decent PILLOW TOP mattress pad will do well - with out the foam and thus without the fire hazard. May be a bit more expensive than an egg crate - but alot safer.

Hazard is the reason egg crates are no longer used in hospitals - or if they are - not allowed to bring home in some hospitals.

Overseas, my S must have gotten the same memory foam topper from Target. I asked him about it today and he said it had made such a difference. I had originally gotten him just a cotton mattress pad but it wasn’t enough. Seems that one inch $40 topper has really made him happy.

I ordered a Sleep Basics x-long twin fiberbed for $39.99 from BB&B and received it today. It’s sooooo soft and “lofty”. This is a terrific alternative to the egg crates or memory foam toppers that some are reluctant to purchase because of the fire hazard.

I had to come back here to thank all of you who suggested the fiberbed and add my positive review. We just dropped S off at college this week. Set up the bed with this and a mattress pad on top-wow, it’s the most comfortable thing ever and one of the best suggestions we got for things to bring to school. I think S’s bed at school rivals my own king reversible pillowtop for comfort now!

I liked the fiberbed so much, we bought one for our king mattress at home.

I do NOT know, though, about the flame retardancy, or what chemicals it might give off when burning - it is man-made, too.
