I wrote an essay on the ‘How did you get caught ?’ topic, but it ending up being really huge : about 1800 words. I have tried to abbreviate it but haven’t had much luck with that. Should I give up such a long essay to U.Chicago ? My English teacher really liked it, and so I’m wondering whether I should bother trying to shorten it. Help !

Holy cow! Mine was around 800 and I thought that was long. It really depends on the topic. I’d take out maybe an entire idea. Just remember that the people reading your essays will be overworked admission officers who read more crappy essays than good ones. Don’t let your essay be intimidating or it might lose its charm before the reading even starts. By the way, I was admitted EA. Good luck!
